Is this chip a problem?

Let me start off by saying I cannot seem to capture this no matter how hard I try. I am using a loupe and tried both phones and it is making me crazy. When i loupe the stone I need to turn it slightly to see the chip and line.

I ran my finger across one of the stones in a new ring and felt a little catch, I had dripped water on it and was just trying to get it off. I looped the stone and there appeared to be a chip on one of the crown facet. I wasn't super concerned as the stone is old and flea bites happen. But as I looked I noticed a thin white line on the table coming out from the chip, now I am paranoid the diamond is going to crack in half or cleave off. At the far end of the line it appears to splinter a bit .

If you are able to see anything is this something do you have any advice? Is this a structural issue? Is it no long safe to wear?

these are the best I can do right now, if anyone has other suggestions for capture this I'm all ears.

If the price you paid for the ring had that chip/crack taken into account
I would love it as is. I would wear it on occasion, and never as a pinky ring. I wouldn’t be entertaining the thought of pulling the stones to create something else with them though.
In looking thru past PS threads on this exact same subject, including my own, - you’ll find widely varying acceptances of consumers. and varying acceptances on the topic of further durability from vendors who participate in the convos. Some say any force on the stone to make that chip/crack/feather worse and have a chunk fall off, would damage the stone irregardless.
Then in other discussions you’ll have the vendor that states it doesn’t matter it’s surface reaching. It’s there and the durability is no different if it wasn’t surface reaching. Or I guess that’s what they are saying.

I think it’s a gamble. There’s just no way to know.

Does it extend to another chip at about 6o’clock on the table facet? That area is a bit more touchy with me, as opposed to one closer to the girdle.

Pretty ring!

Thanks for the response. I didn't know about it before, I think because it is so hard to spot it is unlikely anyone knew it was there.
The price was reasonable but my intention was to use the diamonds for something else-with less impact possibility than a ring. if I leave it as a ring (it fits on a middle or ring finger) I'm afraid of being paranoid that one bump will do it in. Ugh

It does appear to be creeping towards the other side but isn't touching. I don't know if this is new or just how it has always been so I can't say that it will grow.

I have an antique ring with a larger crack than that, and I figure that if it has survived for the last 100 years without issue, then I’ll take my chances.

It comes down to the price and your comfort level with the risk.

Looks like an internal feather reaching the surface, doesnt look to me based on these images as an indented type chip or crack.
You probably never noticed it beforehand and at a certain position the feather catches the light and appears more prominent.... perhaps a mind thing but I wouldnt loose any sleep on that now.

I would not worry about that. I myself have a couple of antique stones with similar surface reaching feathers and then of course small chips, nicks, lots of naturals you name it. It is part of what gives old stones their charm, it is part of their history. I myself wear them proudly, adore them, never had an issue but I am careful in general.

Now when it comes to resetting, that’s a different story. You need a pro setter. But possible. Have reset such stones and then had some MRBs damaged by bad setting with far less inclusions. But when setting a diamond there is always a slight risk involved.

I would personally wear it as is. I just bought a gorgeous Moi et Toi I intend to wear as is. I have an older ring with a large OEC in the center in a bezel that has what your stone has, quite similar and some damage/wear that I am a bit weary about resetting. Then again like I said I have had OMCs, modern pinks with worse and No problem setting or resetting.

YOU have to weigh the risks. But do wear this happily in the ring if you like.
