So my mom had a nice jewelry collection when I was a kid and when she died my dad put it away for me. I never really do much with any of it. She wasn''t overflowing in diamonds per se, just pretty pieces. Anyways I was cleaning my old jewelry box out the other day and this ring was in there in a green ring box. I don''t honestly if it''s a fake cocktail ring or an amethyst or what. the setting looks legitimately gold though not cheap metal.

It barely fits on my ring finger and it really never does. I wear a 7 and my mom had much smaller fingers than I do. I must not be retaining to much water! lol
Anyways I thought I''d ask the pros on here before I take it in somewhere in case it''s lame.

Funny I was wearing another ring of my mom''s for awhile and my dad said ''its a tigers eye!'' he said she told him that too. I had it repaired one day and they said it was black star sapphire. Makes sense since it does have this perfect star right in the middle of it. Nice suprise! That reminds me, that one is due to be fixed up!

Okay I am terrible at taking photos, its dark in the apartment and in person the stone looks a lot more like a light purple than as dark as it''s appearing to be in the pictures.

Thanks for the help! Oh if it is something like an amethyst could someone educate me a bit on what size they think it is etc? I''ve heard that Amethyst tend to be softer stones.

Pretty ring! It might be an amethyst, but I would take it to a gemologist to make sure. Does it change color in various lighting?

It has the look of an amethyst, along with what's referred to as a "Portugese" cut, which suggests Brazilian cutting. Brazil is where most amethysts come from.

My guess on the carat weight would be in the 15 carat neighborhood, give or take.

The gold has a legitimate look to it as well.

I'd say you're probably good to go.

Yes it does change color somewhat. I think it looks different in person and in every photo.l

So what''s the story with amethyst, depending on the cut that plays into the value but size is whatever? I''m not sure how non-diamonds work.

Large Brazilian amethysts are not expensive per carat, around $10/ct I would imagine. Most of the value in that ring would be from the heavy gold setting. As far as it being a beloved ring from your mother, you can''t put a price on that.

I can''t give you a specialist''s opinion, but just wanted to say, woohoo, that''s a fun ring!!

Beautiful Ring, and I love the cutting on that amethyst (well it looks like one to me)

I googled brazillian amethysts and its possible her''s is that but in natural light the stone actually looks quite a bit lighter in color. It''s more of a pink and purple looking stone.

There are also amethysts with a light tone so as to appear pink, so it is entirely possible to be an amethyst, such as the Rose of France which is essentially a very pale pink looking amethyst. The setting is lovely and you received a fine piece of jewellery to remember your mother by.

Hi V-02! Beautiful ring!

I think what you're getting at is -- amethyst rough is such an inexpensive commodity that the cost of cutting the stone will in many cases exceed the cost of the raw materials. So for smaller stones, the cost will be determined more by the cost of cutting than by the cost of the rough unless you're dealing with the exceptional (and more rare) rough.

If the stone in your ring is very pastel it could be the Rose de France that Chrono mentioned. I once fell in love with a 1 carat Rose de France that I didn't buy because they were asking $100 for it!

This was in a resort/tourist trap though, and I've no idea whether that's the norm.

Anyhow, this looks like a beautiful ring and well worth sizing so you can enjoy it more frequently!

Thanks VR that helps!

I''d love to get this possibly set into something white gold and more my style but it''s pretty cool on it''s own as well. I''m going to send it to Single Stone and have them take a look at it for me.
