Is this a good ring? Is it a good price at $2500?

Please help me. I know nothing about jewellery and I'm getting engaged in less than 2 weeks! (my ignorance about jewellery is displayed here - https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/i-promise-you-you-will-never-find-anyone-like-me.122334/)

Here's the ring -

Is that firm a reputable dealer? What does everyone think about the ring and the price?
 
Pearlamn's is a very reputable vendor with many satisfied PS customers. Are you keeping the CZ in the ring? Or replacing it with a diamond?

It's a very pretty ring.
 
I'm not able to afford a diamond at the moment so I'm thinking of keeping the CZ in the ring and replacing it down the road with a real diamond at an anniversary.

My GF is not one for fancy jewellery and spending a lot of money on jewellery herself. However I wanted to surprise her with a beautiful (looking) engagement ring.

My options are -

1) Get another ring with real diamonds around the same price point (given the severe time constraints, probably from Costco or SamsClub), but not this beautiful (at least in my eyes)

2) Get this ring with the CZ.

What I want to know (given my absolute lack of experience and knowledge) is......is this ring anything special? It just happened to catch my eye as being something that I would have liked to give my GF (with a real diamond) if I had more money. However, I still can't personally tell if it's beautiful or not and worth buying.

I guess here's what it boils down to - Diamond vs Setting. Which is more important?
 
I would be very careful if I were you. You can get a good .75 solitaire for you budget. Only get the CZ if you are 100% sure that she would be okay with it.

That could be different for different people. You say she''s not one for fancy jewelry. I think the question you need to ask yourself is, would she rather have a real diamond and a simple setting? or a more inticate setting without the diamond. "Most" women would opt for the former, but you know your gal best.


As far as this setting goes, I think for a Plat ring with that much detail, and diamond melee, that''s a great price. It''s a pretty setting.
 
Yes, Pearlmans is very reputable and that is a lovely ring. Just make sure that when you talk to Pearlmans that the CZ can be taken
out and replaced (sometime in the future). I thought I had read somewhere that when they take a stone out of a bezel it ruins the
bezel.

Can anyone comment on that? Whether you can replace a stone in a bezel setting without ruin the bezel?

BTW- I dont know what your intentions are but I think you should let your GF know that it is a CZ. Let it be
up to her to determine if she wants to tell other folks are not.

Sam, I know she'd be ok with it. She's the type who'd rather put this money towards future savings and not get an expensive diamond ring at all.

However, I really want to surprise her with a beautiful ring. And like I mentioned, when I do have the funds down the road, I'll replace it with a real diamond.

Is this a spectacular looking ring or does it just seem that way to my novice, untrained eye? It may be all the engravings that are catching my attention.

I was concerned about paying that much for only .45ct diamonds. However, it is also a platinum ring. I overlooked that. So I guess the price is in line.
 
My point is that you can get a spectacular diamond ring for $2,500.
 
There were quite a few nice combinations of stones and settings in your last thread within your budget. Is it that you don't like the plain solitare ring style? With this ring from Pearlman's you are paying for pave diamonds, engraving and platinum. When budgets are tight most people put their money towards the center stone and go simple on the setting. The ring you are considering is a very pretty ring but you will be more limited down the road when you want to replace the CZ. The bezel setting will need a stone very close to the CZ's size, 0.75ct.

Some people do prefer to spend more on the setting than the center stone so it's just a matter of choice. Personally I like the ring and all it's fussy antique-like detail. But I still would prefer a real diamond in my ering. And $2400 is considered fairly expensive for a setting.

Hmmm....you guys have got me thinking again. My main issue is time and my tendency to research something to death...something that I don't have the luxury of doing anymore with less than 2 weeks remaining. Plus, I'm an engineer and tend to think in numbers.....I don't really have any eye for what is beautiful when it comes to rings. So I would by far trust your judgement over mine.

Someone pointed out the pearlman's ring in the other thread and it caught my eye and sort of stayed with me.

All of you are pushing me towards a solitaire....but I like this other look of multiple diamonds. Maybe a solitaire is what I should be looking at given my budget. Let me start looking.

Please do point me to some suggestions that you might have. I prefer a ready made ring (stone + setting) since I'd like to get the ring by late next week if possible. If you're the owner of a store, do chime in if you have something nice at a good price.

You say she''s not into fancy jewelry- is a halo ring her style? That''s going to be a lot of diamond, and a lot of ''fancy'' presence on the finger. It''s a beautiful setting, absolutely, but if she tends to lean toward more simple, sleek pieces, I''d go that route with a real diamond. $2500 is a nice budget, and you could do a lot with it.

The only reason we are pushing you towards a solitare is that many women feel very sentimental towards their original engagement diamond. Even when we upgrade it years later we still keep it, put it in a pendant or reset it somehow. It's more special than the setting, which often gets damaged, out-dated or becomes too small.

So on PS you are probably going to get aimed towards the biggest bang for your buck for the diamond, with the setting being appropriate for the budget. However, it's certainly not the only way to go.

If you like the idea of side stones James Allen has a nice selection of more reasonably priced settings in WG. One of my favorites settings.

But here is a lovely stone within your budget. 0.748ct H SI1

In this case, I think a solitaire (or a more simple diamond setting) would be your best bet. It's a classic choice (THE classic, many would say) and if she tells you later on that she wants a setting dripping with diamonds, you're only out a few hundred. It wouldn't work like that the other way around if you've invested $2500 into a halo setting that isn't quite her style, you know?
 
Here''s what I would do given the info that you have. I would buy the diamond loose. The vendor can ship it in a temporary setting. You present the ring to your gf and the two of you choose the setting together. This way she is surprised, but you''re not playing the guessing game.

If that plan does not appeal to you, then your best bet is to go with a solitaire. Get a basic one that is not too expensive like this one:

Wow, you got some good advice there Royce. Personally, I wouldn''t like to be given a CZ for my engagement ring, no matter how pretty the setting is. I think Ellen, and others, have found you some beautiful options for your budget. Then, you could upgrade the setting later on, you will always be able to find a pretty one for 2400$ (and a lot less)!

I think you''re getting great advice here -- I agree that most women would rather have a real diamond in a simple setting than a CZ in a fancy setting (unless for some reason she specifically said she''d want a CZ!).

Put yourself in her shoes, when someone asks her about her ring, is she going to be comfortable saying, "Yes, the setting is diamonds and platinum, but the stone is a CZ"?

Will she be embarrassed to tell people that the diamond is not real or feel like she has to hide the truth?

Again, some people love CZ''s, but I wouldn''t give one as an engagement ring unless my fiancee specifically asked for one.

Ellen, Swingirl, Sam82 and other posters have given you some great options. You have plenty of time to find a nice diamond ring, and your budget is plenty large!

I think it''s a very pretty ring, but I agree with previous posters that it would be better to get her a modest diamond solitaire in a simple gold setting and then upgrade the setting later if she likes.

I have some friends who did what you were thinking of - the girl saw the setting of her dreams, but it was only made to accomodate a 3 carat stone. They bought the setting & put a CZ in it, and her husband promised that he would put a diamond in it by their first anniversary, after his Xmas bonus he would get her a diamond.

Well, she ended up getting pregnant on their wedding night, so with the expense of a new baby, the put the diamond purchase on the back burner. Now she rarely wears the fancy setting with the CZ in it and mostly just wears her wedding band.
