I am new to this forum, but so far it has been very informative. I am thinking of buying the following diamond for an e-ring with a platinum setting. Does this appear to be a good diamond? Is there any other info I should request? Anyone have any similar diamonds to look at? Also, if I purchase a diamond online, should I have it appraised prior to buying it--is this possible? thanks

Welcome colles!

I will leave the diamond info to the more astute in this forum. As to getting it appraised first, most of the vendors listed on PS will allow you to have the stone sent to an independent appraiser prior to any money changing hands. I recently bought via a PS vendor, and he sent the stone to a local appraiser, allowing me to meet with the appraiser when he reviewed the stone. It was a totally painless experience.

As to other diamonds available, the best thing to do would be to talk to a few vendors about the stone you are looking at, and let them know what you are looking for, so they may be able to recommend additional stones in their inventory. You can do a search on the vendor names in the forum and see some pretty good references on the different vendors.

Best of luck in your search and preemptive congrats on your upcoming engagement!

colles,

I think you'll have to blame me for the lack of any other responses to your question. On the last few threads to which I've responded, I've been the last entry on the thread. Accordingly, I think I'm becoming the "kiss of death" on the boards! Maybe I'll change my monikor........

Best of luck in your search. Use the knowledge you have gained as your guide, and your eyes as your filter, and you'll be fine. Just be happy with your choice in the end.

Hi Coles,

I'll break madmarlin's streak, and answer.

It looks like a nice stone, but you should ask for the crown and pavilion angles and run it through the HCA. A sarin report will give you those plus girdle details, etc. (I assume that is the girdle, not the culet you listed.) You can get pricing comps by doing a search for similar stones on the pricescope search engine. This stone is SLIGHTLY smaller than the norm for a 1ct. (They are usually 6.5mm if well cut). It's probably due to the depth, and isn't significantly off, IMO.

For an SI1, it is a good idea to ask for details on the inclusions as well as pictures. Find out type, color, location and general size of the inclusions. Also find out if you can see them from the sides. (eye-clean is face up -- it's not the end of the world, to see them from the sides, but you don't want surprises.) Find out if any of the inclusions break the surface.

Lastly, ask the vendor for a picture of the idealscope. That is a nice way to preview light return without seeing the stone.

Good luck!
