hey guys, i need some help with something. i''ve been looking around for an engagement ring and although i''ve been to quite a few places, judging a good deal from a bad one is kind of hard for me, especially how the quality of the cut can effect the price of a stone with the same 4C specs.

so here''s what i''m looking at right now.

Round Brilliant
1.01ct F SI1
Cut Grade: Ex
Polish: Ex
Symmetry: Ex
Flour: None

HCA: 1.5
Light Return: Ex
Fire: Ex
Scintillation: VG
Spread: VG

Price: $6400

under a firescope, the symmetry is pretty good..

would you guys buy this?

Welcome! Would we buy this? Quite possibly, it would be good to have all the proportions such as the depth, table, crown angle etc and an Idealscope image if you have it.

i don''t have an ideal scope image.. i wish i did.

but here are the proportions..

Table: 58%
Depth: 60.8%
Crown Angle: 34 degrees
Pavillion Angle: 41 degrees
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick

It''s definitely got potential! I say give it a shot, and have an independant appraiser have a look to confirm.

Where abouts are you located?

Hi RPI,

If this is any help, I''m going to be looking at a stone from Whiteflash this week and here are the specs:

1.22ct G SI1
6.83-6.87 mm
Cut: AGS0
Polish/Symmetry: EX/EX
Flour: Neg

Depth%: 62.2
Table%: 54
Crown: 34.8
Pavilion: 40.7
HCA: 1.2 (ex-ex-ex-vg)

Price: $6272 (with Pricescope discount)

Here''s the web page w/ the pics: http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-540918.htm#

Have you heard of the Hearts on Fire Dream Diamond at all?

The Hearts on Fire Diamonds are the most perfectly cut diamond in the world.

I also agree with Ellen you need an independant appraiser to look at the stone before you buy it. Also, you must make sure that the diamond is eye-clean with a clarity grade of SI1. What certificate does the diamond come with? (GIA, EGL, AGA, etc...) Not all certificates are the same (strictness factor).

@ kjlawrence63

i''m located in nyc. this diamond is from the DD.

yes i''ve heard of the hearts on fire brand of diamonds, but i don''t think i''ll go for signature super ideals at all. i just can''t afford the premium on these kinds of diamonds.

@ newbie124

nice stone. you see? every time i see something like this, i''m almost convinced that i''m getting ripped off. bigger carat weight, 1 color grade down, better HCA, and it''s cheaper to boot! can anyone tell me how this makes sense?

also, are the images on these sites trustworthy?

@ jenna

i''ll definitely take it to an independent appraiser, but can i do this before i buy? most stores tell me that AFTER i buy, i have 15 or 30 days to return it if i don''t like what the appraiser says about it.

it is GIA certified.

to all..

i have seen this diamond under a firescope (the thing that shows light leakage) and there is minimal leakage. the symmetry is pretty good too. i just don''t have images to show for it. i don''t have much more to tell you about this rock.

the main reason i''m leaning towards this stone is because the place that is offering it is the only place that has a firescope, brilliance scope and the H&A viewer for me to use. every where else doesn''t have them, so i don''t really trust them when they say, "these are beautiful stones."

do you guys know of places in the DD that has all these scopes and viewers?

thanks a bunch!

The Hearts on Fire Diamonds are the most perfectly cut diamond in the world.

You might want to do some more research on this. There are plenty of other super ideal cut diamonds that are just as nice as the HOF, without the big premium!

Stick around here, you''ll learn a lot!

RPI, I would check out Mark Turnowski at Engagement Rings Direct. He is in the diamond district technically, but not in a booth. You'll need to make an appointment. He is a really trustworthy guy (just check out all the recommendations here using the search tool) and has great stones and prices.

Also, if you're willing to go out of manhattan, Good Old Gold on Long Island is also worth the drive. They are fantastic as well.

Here is Mark's info (we bought from him and couldn't be happier):

And Good Old Gold:

yeah. i tried to contact mark on thursday but he never responded. i think i''ll just call the number instead. is mark the only person i should work with at ERD?

RPI,

Yeah, I''m pretty excited to see how the stone performs in person. With Whiteflash we had the option of either having them send it directly to the appraiser or buying the stone and taking it to the appraiser ourselves. WF has a 10-day return policy if you end up not liking the stone or doesn''t appraise well. I decided to have them ship the stone to us so that we can take it around to do comparisons if necessary or take it to the jeweler who I want to do the custom setting and see how it looks in the model settings that they have. The other advantage is that the return shipping would be slightly cheaper for us to send it back ourselves if we didn''t like it versus the shipping they would charge returning from the appraiser.

My aunt and uncle were actually recently in NYC and went to the Diamond District to shop for stones. When I told my aunt that we were also looking for engagement diamonds, she told me not to do anything until she scouted out some of the DD shops (she''s kind of conservative and doesn''t trust buying diamonds online). She called me from the first store they went to and none of their stones could match the ones I found online through the Pricescope vendors. One stone came kind of close except it had a GIA report from 2005 and they said that back then GIA did not provide dimensions for crown and pavilion. So I thought that was kind of sketchy and of course it''d be hard to compare w/ the other stones w/o all the info.

Although this is my first experience buying diamonds, I trust the online vendors mentioned on this site. I think there''s such a negative/skeptical stigma w/ online buying that these vendors have to overcome that their business really rests on their good reputation and customer service. If they screw over their customers, word will get around eventually and people will stop buying. So I almost trust the online sellers more than the B&M stores. So long story short, I trust the photos that they''re posting online. However, I definitely plan to (and recommend that you) get an independent appraisal before the trial period is over!

haha. 2005 isn''t so bad. i''ve got 2 GIA reports from 2002. i literally laughed when i saw the date.

Here''s a few. Bankwire price is the discount. Great company.

This one is actually branded, an Isee2, but the company isn''t keen on internet advertising, so that''s why the grading report isn''t online. I happen to own one of these, they cut an oustanding stone. These are priced just as unbranded are though.

Another great company.

2% off with PS discount.

Their personal branded diamond. 5% off with PS discount. Need to ask if eyeclean (on all SI1)

They don''t really get much better than any of these.

Nope, you can work with anyone there. They are all great.

Both WhiteFlash and Good Old Gold carry super-ideals at competitive prices, and I have bought from both with 100% satisfaction! I''d never, ever pay the premium for something like HOF when I can get the SAME thing for a huge amount less!

are there any other places in the DD that have firescopes and H&A viewers available for their customers to use?
