Hey Guys, I was goggling on pros and cons of square vs. round diamonds and found this website. I am glad I did because I need to make a decision and appreciate very much your input. I like this ring Jeff coopers with princess cut model so brought the ring and I am heading to the store now to pick the diamond. The retailer gave a me deal
1.20 ct
Color E
IF
Very good cut
for $8170.00

Is this a good deal??

Cheers

Welcome.

You can use the Pricescope your diamond tool at the top of the browser to find competitive pricing and see where your diamond falls. Depending on the other factors of this diamond, it looks like it falls right in the middle of the ones listed. But, as you will find over and over again on this site...You have to see a fancy in person!! You should look at a lot of diamonds side by side. See if YOU think that this diamond with all it''s glory is better than the others.

Also, is there a reason you want to keep the color and clarity so high? While it will be very white and clear, so would an F,G in a VS1,2. You could go down on the color or clarity (or both) and then be able to save the money or go bigger, change setting, etc. Some people just like to know they have a time "top" type stone, though.

As far as the setting, I''m not a good judge of those modern looks. I prefer the antique-y styles. SO, maybe someone else can give you an opinion on that.

Good Luck!!

is the diamond certified and if so, who certified it?

Thank you very much for your reply somethingshiny and avlis. I have little more details now
1.gif
. The diamond is certified by GIA and measurements are 6.1x5.5x4.1, thin to think , GIA certificate # is laser printed in the diamond (not sure if that''s standard practice)

Somethingshiny, to answer your question the first diamond I’ve brought for my wife is really not that good and feel very guilty. I was loaded with other commitments at that time, this time I want to her to have the best but at the same time I don’t want to be get ripped off. Thanks again for your help guys

Cheers

Hi Shas,
Have you seen it? 6.1x5.5x4.1 doesn''t seem very square for a princess.

Whatmeworry, I Haven’t looked at it yet, but going in tomorrow. The weather is very bad here today. Can you tell me how to judge a cut is good or not

Thanks

a GOOD cut is judged by the dimensions of the stone. However, what''s good to you is what''s important. (yes, it''s normal to have the laser inscription for a stone that''s GIA cert in that carat range)

You should see how the stone reacts to the light. Look at it in office light, dim light, sunlight, everything you can manage. You will see broad flashes and the more sparkly fire. It''s up to you which you like. I prefer lots of broad flash and a little less of the sparkle. But, since you''re going the princess route, you probably like the sparkle. Also, look at the symmetry of the stone. Does one side have less brilliance or unbalanced looking.

The vendor should allow you to look at the stone under a scope. Even though you may not know what you''re looking at or for, you''ll notice if something bothers you. Also, as I said before, look at other stones next to it.

This princess is pretty rectangular, also make sure that it will set properly in the setting you already have purchased. That setting looks like it may be best with a very square stone. You may see a weird dark or light spot towards the center of the diamond due to the shape being longer. Check it out and make sure you like the look. And, since there are stones in the setting, you''ll want to make sure they don''t look yellow next to that really clear center stone.

Other than that, keep your eyes peeled! You never know what might catch your attention! There are a lot of great square cut stones that look very different from one another.

Good Luck!! Let us know how it goes.

Well I haven''t really shopped for a princess, but knowledge and patience will get you a good diamond.

Normally you should use an Ideal Scope or ASET scope to help you
judge the cut quality of a princess. See this link for evaluating princess cuts
http://www.ideal-scope.com/using_fancy.asp

But your jeweler may not have one. So what to do?

1. Look at the pictures of well cut diamonds so you know what to
compare to. Whiteflash and Infinity Diamonds have great examples
of AGS0 princess. If your jeweler has an AGS0 princess compare
it to that.
2. Examine it using fluorescent lighting, not the bright lights
normally used in jewelry stores. Maybe your jeweler can let you
take the diamond home for a few days before you decide. Always
check on the return policy before you buy.
3. Evaluate it for symmetry. Use a jeweler''s loupe to do this
Does the diamond look symmetric and pleasing? If your jeweler
has a hearts and arrow scope. You could use that as well
4. Evaluate it for light leakage. Look at the diamond with a dark colored
background behind it. If you can see the background easily
through the diamond, you have leakage.
5. Check for excessive head blockage/nail head effects. Are there large dark spots
near the center of diamond when you look at it from arms length?
6. Read Dave Atlas''s article on fancy cuts. http://www.pricescope.com/fancy.asp
7. Compare the diamond you are interested in with other diamonds.
Look at lots and lots of other diamonds till you feel you can judge a good cut from a mediocre one.

Good luck. Personally I would get a great cut VS over an average cut IF.

Okay now my excel sheet is getting big

. I agree with you''ll on going for great cut with VS1/VS2 instead of an average cut IF. What do you''ll think about this

I went and looked at it the diamonds just now and i wasn't that impressed with the 1.20ct ring, however I did like the other one which is 1.51ct, princes cut, Excellent Polish, very good symmetry, 6.22x5.95x4.64, 0 cullet, thick griddle, VS1, E color ="="> $10,750. I had to make decision by this evening on this one since some else also interested. Is this any good?

Thanks

Well the price is comparable to other GIA graded stones of the same weight. Is it GIA graded? It seems smaller compared to other 1.51 princess. Probably because of the thick girdle. What is the return policy if you later decided you liked something else better? Or if she liked something else?

Princess cuts are hard to analyze, I''d opt for something like this so I really knew what I was getting:
http://www.whiteflash.com/princess/Princess-cut-diamond-59862.htm#

You are right on. When compared right next 1.51ct does looks smaller than 1.20ct one. They both are GIA certified with laser imprinted. They have a buy back policy for same price and only food for exchanges or upgrades with in one year. Do you think the cut is ok? It has table 72% and little worried about that

It''s hard to tell the cut by the numbers on fancies but if this 1.5 looks smaller than the 1.2, it''s not a great cut. That and the thick girdle. I would keep looking. That return policy is not that impressive. Patience....

Yes, patience is the key. I’ve taken little more time and went to Whiteflash.com office
2.gif
. I have to admit the people over there were very nice, specially Bob Hoskins. You can see the southern hospitality. Tomorrow I have another appointment to see which diamond fits my Jeff coopers ring. These are the short listed for now...any comment
