That litnon one is lovely, really red and very well cut! I would ask for a video. The Kosnar one looks very nice too, the substantial size will look magnificent on the finger.

This one is from Yvonne Raley. She’s very popular here, there is a thread dedicated to her. If you like her designs, you can ask her to custom make a ring with the stone.

See if she would also consider spinels, since for ages red spinels were thought to be and classified as ruby, even in case of some famous jewels, they can be some much alike. And the top red color of spinels is equivalent to the color of ruby, but with a budget friendly price. They are also hard and durable.

Below if you are interested and want to find out more some links:

"Red spinel ranges from orangy red to purplish red, with pure red to slightly purplish red hues of medium to medium-dark tone considered the finest of all. A top-quality 5-ct. red spinel might sell for around a tenth the price of an equivalent-quality ruby"

"The transparent red spinels were called spinel-rubies or balas rubies. In the past, before the arrival of modern science, spinels and rubies were equally known as rubies. After the 18th century the word ruby was only used for the red gem variety of the mineral corundum and the word spinel came to be used. "

"Some spinels are among the most famous gemstones; among them are the Black Prince's Ruby and the "Timur ruby" in the British Crown Jewels"

"The Timur Ruby is an unfaceted, 361-carat (72 g) polished red spinel set in a necklace for Queen Victoria in 1853. It was believed to be a ruby until 1851."

"The Black Prince's Ruby is a large, irregular cabochon red spinel weighing 170 carats (34 g) set in the cross pattée above the Cullinan II at the front of the Imperial State Crown of England. The spinel is one of the oldest parts of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom, with a history dating back to the middle of the 14th century.
All red gemstones used to be referred to as rubies or "balas rubies". It wasn't until 1783 that spinels were differentiated from rubies."

I love the options youve been given from litnon, rover dery, and kosnar. I would see which one she likes best and ask for a video.

I've purchased from Roger and he is one of the best. His stones are top notch with fantastic cuts. Ive never purchased from litton or kosnar, but have inquired about a few pieces and they were both responsive and very kind.

I would also think a little bit about how you are going to set it. Custom setting can be complicated, so you might want to go with a vendor that can do all of it (e.g. you can purchase a stone from them and have them set it). Just something to consider!

We both really love these stones, more specifically the Kosnar and Rogerdery ones! Thanks heaps for that, will definitely be considering these for our picks.

Oh wow, thats some interesting facts, well also look at some Spinel stones, thanks for your help :) Any reason why they're so much cheaper than the other gems (Ruby / Rhodolite )?

Spinels are great! I didn’t suggest a spinel as I thought red ones were too expensive, but I saw this one on eBay. Price seems too good (possibly too dark?) but the vendor is willing to send to GIA for $150.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-39-Cts-N...004716?hash=item48a72720ec:g:OBgAAOSwVtZaMKJy

It seems like the Red Spinels are possibly the cheapest option haha

I agree, they're some beautiful choices. I will be inquiring hopefully tonight, and ask for a video on them.
I might have the setting done at my jeweller as it'll be alot easier for us and allows my girlfriend to get some hands-on time with this experience haha

Marketing I suppose. A lot of money was put into building up a corundum ruby as the most desirable red stone and into downplaying reputation of spinels as a "ruby substitute" for budget oriented customers. And the rumor is they used to be more desirable ages ago. I personally blame marketing for that.
Also, spinels are much more rare than ruby, so it is not worth to make them into a commercial stone and put resources into their marketing. That's the rumor I've heard. Not sure if true.
Also, spinels price vary depending on the color. Top colors (which is what you are after), are much more expensive then others. However, still much cheaper then corundum ruby of the same color.
I hope experienced PS users can help you find that ideal ruby color pear spinel.

Quite comprehensive overview of spinels:

Your theory makes sense haha, thanks for your insight :)

Yes they are cheaper than rubies but decent red spinels are also very expensive! :wavey:

I think the eBay option offered above will likely be very dark and dull in real life so personally I would avoid it.

Litnon is a reputable seller but returns from Oz may be difficult so choose carefully.

The Kosnar stone is cut beautifully but is quite large and will have orange undertones ok?

I still like the Langford Gems Garnet best!

Also if you cannot find exactly what you like - try contacting Doug from https://www.bespoke-gems.com He is Sydney based and can source the right rough and cut it to order for you!
Here is an example of a Garnet he cut previously:

You're all brilliant, can't believe how much help you are all giving me. My girlfriend would really appreciate this, thank you so much!

Awww shucks! :roll2: Gotta support local talent...

Imagine a Bespoke Gems precision cut stone set by http://www.alistairkelsey.com/coloured-stone now that’s a combo I could envision!

I agree! Local talent is always worth the investment

Doug actually has some gorgeous garnet rough in at the moment, including some that he describes as deep wine-colored which sounds like exactly what your girlfriend is after. He also has a piece that he says would be perfect for a pear cut. I'd definitely give him a call.
doug-menadue-bespoke-gems-african-garnets-r262a-small.jpg

Also, if someone could please talk me out buying that gorgeous Swiss blue top he has in I would be very grateful. I have a project I'm already working on and I can't afford to get distracted by this beautiful piece that would look so amazing on my hand!

Oh wow they're some pretty rough garnets, i sent them to her now, and I've already emailed Doug to talk to him about pricing etc. Sadly i cant meet with him for call for a few days because of work.

Honestly, i can't stop looking at all his stones makes me want to spoil my girlfriend a tonne hhahah too bad my wallet barely has space for an engagement ring!

Well, you will have a lifetime to spoil her, remember keep your promise!
And seems you found the best option for you. You will be able to see the stone in real life and make sure it is exactly what you want.

Yup - that's what they look like in the wild! That's why good cutters are such amazing artists - they take a hunk of rock and work with its natural properties to bring out its beauty and color and fire. I think getting a custom cut stone is a great choice for you and Doug is definitely a cutter that can make it happen.

If you decide to go this route, please come back with pics once it's cut and set. I love a good dark red pear cut!

I think for durability's sake, I would still try to go with a ruby. I hope I'm not too late to chime in, but I recommend this stone that is GIA certified for $1280USD. I think this is a fantastic price for a 1.51ct ruby that is not too dark, even if it is moderately included. The cut is not perfect, but I think that color will look fantastic in a ring!

Even though ruby is harder, spinel is harder than garnet. My vote is for spinel, because you can find a gorgeous one for a fraction of the cost of fine ruby. I also love and collect garnets. They show a little bit of facet wear with time. There are some beautiful ruby colored garnets being mined now.

I’m so impressed with the research you’ve done and I hope your bride-to-be is thrilled!

IMHO this will be almost black in real life. The bright video is flooded with light. The pic on the gia cert is nearly black, and it will be even darker once set.

The issue is that it's the wrong cut, it's really important for it to be a pear! Thanks for the link though.

I will look into those for sure, is big is the difference in hardness between a Garnet & a Spinel? I heard any hardness 7 and up is good for everyday wear.

Haha thank you, she deserves something different, we're not a fan of generic off-the-shelf diamond rings! (Nor can we afford a decent one)

Here is 1.3ct pear spinel in the color described as "Vivid Pure Rich Red". The vendor is listed on the PS reference list:
https://www.africagems.com/pear-red-spinel-gemstone-22915329.html

That is no doubt a stunning stone, sadly it's pretty far outside of my price range, and i was hoping to have a longer stone (7.9mm is a bit small). Thanks alot though

I agree with this aswell, from what i've learnt haha

OP, I think you’ve reached a great solution, sourced great local artisans, and I look forward to seeing your creation. Garnets have been used in jewelry since ancient times, so I think they are special stones.

Appreciate your help, i'll try to keep this post updated until i've gotten the ring and hopefully post a photo!

@Paloking, spinel has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. There are different families of garnets, and the hardness ranges from 6.5-7.5. The red ones you are looking at are toward the harder side of that range. You are right that the usual wearing distinction is made as “harder than quartz” (7) which is what most dust is made of. The green stones in my avatar ring are demantoid garnets which are among the softest garnets. This is a special occasion ring for me. (The red is the size (4mm) of Winza ruby I could afford, LOL)

May I share with you a picture of my raspberry rhodolite garnet? (Leaves to go find a picture....) :read:

Your wife is going to be very happy with her engagement ring!

Hmm i'll try find a good affordable spinel otherwise the Red Garnet doesn't seem too bad at that Hardness.
I would love to see it!
haha i really hope so, its worth the research for sure :)

I had the pleasure to get some really pretty rhodolites from Mozambique, deep purple red. I imagine the same beauty in ruby would have cost me 10 times more. Even if rhodolite would break/fall apart 10 times faster than ruby, I could still buy ten rhodolites instead.

Sorry for the delay...I had to take a few new photos. I found an antique setting (with worn out prongs) and my local jeweler found the perfect replacement head for it. This is a special cut by Gary Braun at Finewater, featuring a high crown with small table. I got the garnet (Tanzanian, 7 mm) secondhand on LoupeTroop too. My total cost including resizing to size 5 and jeweler's costs was $734. This is an anniversary ring for me but I think something in this style would make a pretty engagement ring too!

P.S. I am just throwing this out there as general marriage advice. Maybe you can guess by my hands I've been married awhile (happily so). You can find beautiful things in every price range. We've always lived rather humbly and within our means, and I am so grateful for that. The peace of mind is priceless. Paloking deserves a lot of credit for finding out what his bride would enjoy and finding it in a price range that suits them both. I love that!! This is one of the great things about Pricescope. I have learned so much here and y'all helped me bunches!!!

I hope you get "bit by the bug," @Paloking We have a lot of fun here!
