hey guys! I’m new to this forum, someone on Reddit recommended me to post my find on here. I’ve been looking for a natural Ruby for an engagement ring in a Pear cut.
This find seems to be really cheap for its size (1.5ct), and its apparently only been heat treated. He also included certification in the cost.

Here’s the link:

Please let me know what you guys think of it! Is it too good to be true haha

I think the stone isn't likely to be well-cut, and might be overly dark in person. What specs are you looking for (e.g. size, treatment vs. heat only, price)?

My price range is under $1000 AUD (but that completely depends on if the gems worth it, may stretch). Looking for a stone about 1.5ct and only heat treated.

For a ruby that's only heat treated and 1.5ct in a specific cut, it's going to be tough to find in 1K AUD or less. Any chance you'd consider a red spinel? They are gorgeous and durable stones.

That’s why im finding the link I attached so hard to believe haha, it seems to be so perfect!
I wouldn’t mind stretching the budget if I find something worth while. My gf really loves rubies, and since it’s an engagement ring it’s really important I get exactly what she loves

I honestly think you (and she) would be disappointed by that first stone you linked. It might be a ruby in name, but it won't look like one IRL. It will almost certainly be too dark and/or brownish. I think the one @LisaRN linked is more likely to look nice in person.

I think she likes deeper red rubies ! I just saw this one: http://www.multicolour.com/detail/?/details/RB10638aa
And she likes it, it’s double my budget but I think it’s worth considering. Do you think this one is worth it?

Only my personal opinion...

This color is a bit dangerous. On my ipad I see a touch of orange/brown(?)...
Clarity is very good - It could be Be treated.

Here it is o.k. course they announce it is Be treated...

So you need a lab report that this one is only heated without any other treatment.

The stone is quite attractive - my personal opinion it is a nice SAPPHIRE.

@Paloking I think this one will also look very dark after setting, unfortunately. What about one of these options? Some aren't as big as you wanted, and some are more pink than pure red, but you could put them in a halo-style ring to give better finger coverage.

I think she wants it dark, she doesn’t like Pink haha is darkness more a personal opinion or are dark rubies bad rubies?

As someone who had a dark, treated, cheap, ugly ruby as my initial engagement ring please let me share my lesson! I think you should spend some time discussing with her what she wants exactly. You have a specific tight budget so spend the time researching. :read: Don’t rush into something coz it’s cheap...

Pear cut only? Is she open to other shapes
Size range desired?
Light or dark ruby? Red/pink or purple tones?
Is clarity important to her?
What treatments are acceptable?
Is she open to alternative stones such as Spinel, Garnet, Rubellite?
Second-hand ring from Ruby Lane?

I'm pretty sure i've nailed down exactly what shes looking for haha
She wants a Pear only, around 1.5ct preferably (8-10mm long), dark ruby with more red tones. Clarity is important, but not the highest priority and only heat treatments are acceptable. She really loves Rubies, and she doesn't want anything else haha
I'll look through Ruby Lane, but currently, it's still preferred to have it have set for her with her own gem.

Those are really beautiful, the closest one to what im looking for is $6,662 which is sadly way more than my budget can allow. Thanks heaps though

Stones are always brightest in the vendor pictures. Because they are generally flooded with very bright light. They will look a lot darker under normal light conditions (or in your kitchen, office or living room away from direct sunglight).

Stones get even darker once they are set. Because the setting blocks a lot of the light.

You need to aim multiple shades lighter than your ideal colour -- in order to get the perfect stone you are both looking for.

Hmmm ok, just saw your reply above. Possibly with your budget finding something that meets all those criteria may be a challenge! Will keep hunting...

Oh wow didn't consider that at all, ill let her know all of that and see what shade she wants! I appreciate this information.

Yea haha, sadly i'm living week by week at the moment to get this ring done, really appreciate your effort

Rubies are particularly challenging to get right on a budget. :(2 I would consider asking her if she will extend her criteria to Spinel and Rhodolite or Rubellite Garnet to give you many more options within your budget. In my opinion they often look much better with nicer clarity & colour anyway! You could always offer to upgrade to a ruby later for your 5 year wedding anniversary?

It’s okay for her to like dark rubies, just bear in mind that, when shopping online, these stones are brightly lit for their photos, and they could be photoshopped to look more saturated. Dark stones are often darker in real life. Also when they are set in a ring, they become even darker. That’s why the experienced PS-ers here are guiding you away from choosing the very dark ones, so you won’t end up with a blackish-red ruby with no light or sparkle.

You also mentioned she doesn’t like pink - so generally red stones fall into one of two categories - undertones of pink/purple OR orange/brown. Usually ruby falls into the former so having some slight pink is a good thing. It’s totally up to her but finding a TRUE RED is literally like finding a unicorn... trust me we’ve all looked! ;)2

I vote for a perfect rhodolite. Less stress, much more beautiful, lots of choice. A ruby under heavy budget restrains may only result in disappointments.

That makes alot of sense, im going to be seeing her in an hour or so, i'll explain all this to her!

This is lovely: reputable Aussie seller, nice cutting size & colour and in your budget too.

Oh ok, i guess it's the generic image of a ruby is just red haha, thank you for informing me

I will look in to them for sure, ill have a speak with her about this asap.

Just letting you all know, she's pretty happy with the Rhodolite stones, the color/size are perfect. Would love some more recommendations for jewellers/sources or even some more picks :)
