Hi,

A local jeweller has offered me the following deal on a stone for my faincee''s e ring.

1.01 carat
Colour G
Clarity VS2
measurements 6.67 - 6.59 x 3.79

round brilliant

egl certified

4900 + CA tax

I would really appreciate some feedback

cut is not an ideal - but he says it is good and it is a reputable store that gets some good feedback on PS...

well, just going by the diameter, it''s probably a little shallow. check for darkness.

Before you buy a less than ideal cut take a look at stones like this;

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamonds/round-cut-diamond-78260.htm#

It's a few hundred more, and you lose a bit in the color and clarity department, but the cut more than makes up for in IMHO. For fire and sparkle on your girl's hand I'll bet this will eat that 1.01 for lunch.

Using the price comparison tool above, it''s on the Cheap side for your stats (G VS2) IF your stone was GIA graded. On the other hand, it''s a little more Expensive than other G VS2 stones that are EGL certified, which is what you have.

I believe there was a small sample test done by David Atlas (I think, article in the tools section above) that shows certain EGL labs can grade a stone one colour and/or clarity rating higher than a GIA lab. This lack of consistency and at times, inflated grading, dminishes some of the perceived value of the stone - because of course, it might not be what it''s stated to be on the certificate.

Hi Brit

As Julie says, this looks like a shallow proportioned stone, it will look large for the weight but it is possible cut quality has been sacrificed. Also EGL can grade less strictly than GIA or AGS. What I would suggest is post all the info from the report on the diamond here so we can check it over for you, it might possibly have some visual issues such as obstruction ( darkness). Do you know which branch of EGL graded the diamond such as EGL USA, Israel etc?
