PSers, help needed! Please check out this stone:

is there a big window in the middle? or is it just lighting and angle? I am not very confident on my judge of FCD as I am a newbie.

one thing i really dont like JA is that they often times lack key details. they just simply say its a "yellow". i guess this is a very strong intense...maybe not vivid yet but very close? what do you think?

how do you think the overall performance of the stone? how bad do you think the issue is if there is any? worth consideration?

thanks a lot for the input!

It's described as intense on the GIA cert isn't it? Dont know enough to comment on the cut but it certainly looks odd in the middle, might just be the angle?? Have you had a look at other coloured diamond vendors like Diamonds by Lauren and Leibish? Always good to get your eye in by looking at lots of diamonds!

The cut is atrocious; they tried to save as much weight as possible on the shallow rough and ended up with a large windowed stone. The GIA lab report describes the colour as Fancy Intense.

This stone is very shallow and therefor suffers. I would not waste my money on this one.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions! i am glad my thoughts on this stone was verified and I think my days of checking FCD on James Allen is done. i have tried a while and can seldom find a good stone there.

I have had Leibish purchase before and am very satisfied. overall i think leibish provides very good quality with a nice price. the only one "complain" i have for them is that most of their stones have such good clarity, which is not very necessary to me. I tried DBL but the way they picture the stones makes it really hard for me to "read" - hard to tell the leakage, window and bow-ties. I don't know if anyone here share the same feeling with me. I'd love to discuss with you how to "read" DBL's pictures if you are interested.

I love this peachy colored one. wonder if it is really that color IRL?
I certainly wouldn't call it "yellow".

what about this elongated cushion? I really like the faceting of this cushion.

Never seen a big window like that stone you posted on JA..hmmm.

OK...$2,000 0.72c VS2 diamond vs $25,000 1.07c I2 daimond:
Compare them side by side...I know the 1.07 is brownish orange pinkish but really?
They are even close to the same size face up. Think I would pick the $2,000 one...LOL!

Ariel, to be honest i like the color of the 0.72 better. and i dont see a lot pink tone in that 1.07 ct one. i wonder if james allen can take pictures of stones for customers. i requested that to their online chatting assistants and they always ducked it. guess they dont have any stones in their own inventory. have you or anyone here bought stones from DBL? any tips on how to tell the actual color and leakage from their pictures?

Hi Newbie,
We do have plenty of clients who post here- but maybe they won't see your question as its buried in this thread.
About leakage: I will say that this is an important element in fancy colored diamonds. I do believe my photos show this.

It will be difficult to find a perfectly cut FCD due to the cost and rarity of the rough material, in addition to the priority being colour. That said, we still aim for the best cut possible within those limitations.

This is a very interesting statement Chrono- it got me to thinking a bit.
Is any cut "perfect"?
I suppose we can say a super ideal Round Brilliant Cut is "perfect"- however that is meaningless if someone wants a cushion.
Can any cushion cut be "perfect"? Should it be a square cushion or rectangular? Straight sides or bowed? Cushion Modified Brilliant, Cushion Brilliant or possibly Old Mine Brilliant?

I guess what I'm saying is that the manner in which a diamond is cut will be based on physical aspects like the shape size and color and other aspects of the rough. The best cutters use rough to produce stones that take advantage of the natural characteristics of the rough.

Once it's cut, it's up to us to assess the quality of cut. That's a tricky part - surely trickier with fancy shapes than with round diamonds.
There's a tendency to relate aspects of round diamond cut quality to other shapes.
Leakage is a great example.
A leaky round won't look like we expect a round to look.
Yet leakage is an essential element in many cushion and radiant cut diamonds- both colorless and fancy color.
So- there are cases of Fancy Colored Diamonds I'd consider "perfectly cut" which have totally different types of light performance than round diamonds.

One thing is for sure, a badly cut Fancy Colored Diamond can be quite ugly even if the color is great.
Conversely, a stone with a great cut, and unusual color can be very beautiful.

My statement in reference to "perfect cut" is in comparison to colourless round diamonds. In a way, you can also view it as the precision cut versus well well cut but not precision cut coloured stones. We used to call those "native cuts" but are finally moving away from the use of that term.

I've bought several stones from David. Below are some photos of Fancy Brown Pink Cushion I got from him. The Fancy Light Yellow Asscher was also from him. Both are gorgeous stones. I think the color in his photos is pretty accurate. You can also tell leakage or what not from his photos. He will also take a video of the stone you're interested in, in different lighting environment if you ask him to. :)

And I've also bought from Leibish. The Fancy Intense Yellow EC below is from Leibish. In the last picture, my wife's ring is the FIY from Leibish and my ring is the FLY from DBL.
