Looking at this stone and I want to know if you think $18,000 is a fair price. It is a GIA 3.02 J SI2 stone, looks eye clean to me with no traces of yellow or inclusions..but I'm really not an expert at all! I simply am looking for a lovely ring that will sparkle ;-)

1. What do you think of the stone? Is it a fair price or should I haggle more?
2. Do you see any inclusions in the video? Is it truly eye clean
3. Does it seem yellow to you?
4. Based on my finger, how big does it look?

Buying myself an "upgrade ring", first time shopping for a diamond by myself, so would love your opinions! I want to set it in a halo setting down the line.

Hi jmill,

Lots to answer, so I'll break it down as best I can.

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't look like the stone is doing much sparkling really, the videos are not the best way to tell granted, but I think what you have there is a commercial cut which has been crafted for weight to hit the 3ct mark, this is often the case. The price, you can do a search for comparable stones, it's in the ballpark.

I can't judge the visibility of any inclusions in a video and it would be remiss of me to do so, plus what's eyeclean is so subjective. What matters to you is how visible the inclusions are to you the wearer, chances are at SI2 in this size that you'll see something.

I can't judge the colour or lack thereof either from a video, again that's up to your own eyes and taste.

It looks big on your finger alright!

Cushions vary so much and the knowledge and type of cushions now available, including cushions cut for beauty and sparkle like the August Vintage from Good old Gold are incredible. If you're not in a rush, see if any of the vendors here like Good old Gold, Whiteflash and so forth can find you a good one, or have a look around at what's available before you pull the trigger.

Here there are many tutorials on finding a great cushion and the types available so you can make an informed choice. That's not to say this isn't the stone for you in the end, but there's a lot of questions that you need to consider. I'd also make any sale contingent on a satisfactory report from an independent appraiser, that would be a worthwhile investment.

Also when you say it's eye clean, check it out in different lights as sometimes inclusions jump out in different lighting conditions.

The videos are not close up of the diamond, and it moves around a lot, so these are my 2 cents:

1) It's hard to put a price on it since based on the video, I can't tell much about it's performance/eye cleanliness - which impacts the price. Is this a crushed ice cushion?

2) I can't tell if it's eye clean or not. Ditto to what @Lorelei said about eye cleanliness above.

Also, based on the GIA plot, there's a feather close to the girdle. It might be worthwhile getting an appraiser to check it out and determine if this might be an issue e.g. a knock at the right angle might cause the stone to fracture etc.

3) I can see the J tint - it's not white white, but soft white with a creamy tint. When you saw it in person what did you think? Some people are color sensitive while others are not.

4) It looks like a pretty nice sized diamond to me!

Do you have it on hold with your vendor because it is on another website that has a nice video...I'll post the link if you have it on hold.
