Hi Everyone,

Is there really a color difference between H and I? I''m looking at a 2.21 carat diamond that is eye-clean from all angles, and I think I may have found it. It''s an I, VS2. Is it worth sacrificing the size and clarity to go up one color grade to an H? Also, this diamond will be set as a solitaire with platinum prongs and a YG band.

Thanks,
Bella

Hi Bella,

Colours are actually colour-ranges. Your diamond may be a high I, close to H or possibly even H with another lab, or a low I, close to a J or a J or lower with another lab.

First question thus is, which lab graded this stone I-VS2?

If a reliable lab, the I-range is not far from, actually next to the H-range. From the side, you may see the difference, while face-up, the difference might be unnoticeable.

Also the cut-quality will influence the face-up observation.

Live long,

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your response. The ring was graded by GIA. The information on the ring can be found here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/i-think-i-found-my-ring-opinions-plz.137791/

I''ve learned so much from this website and I''m definitely sticking with an Excellent cut grade.

Unfortunately, I''m not able to see the ring and I''m waiting for the IS image to come. It has an HCA of 1. I plan on asking one of James Allen''s gemologists to look at it before I decide to buy, but will they know if it''s on the higher range or lower range?

Thank again,
Bella

Hi Bella,

James Allen''s gemologists will definitely be able to tell you if the diamond is a high I, closer to H, or a low I, closer to J. I worked with Julianna and she was fantastic, AND HONEST. I bought a J coloured oval (with strong blue fluoresence) from JA and every description that Julianna gave me about the diamond was accurate. Good Luck !

here''s an perfect example of what Paul posted above...
one stone is an high H color closer to G and the other one is an lo I closer to J.
