Is There a Cure for Diamond Fever?

I've been obsessing for two months and it 's starting to make me crazy. Notebook full of research, countless hours online and in B&M stores.
I've bought and returned several diamonds from BN, then did the same at JA until I finally thought I found the cure at JA - a great Asscher.

For 3 weeks I was in love, then wanted to have another "experience". Ended up buying a JA round on eBay because it was a deal I could not refuse. Now still lurking & looking and scheming to upgrade/trade in.
I have my mother's two engagement rings which are around 2+ct each - so it's not BIG I'm looking for, but small perfection, the most fire, the most beautiful stone. All the diamonds I have are great CCC, but I wonder if going from Ideal to a "hearts" cut would be even more intense, and then I saw a nano-cut at a local jewelers, but the stones they use are not great - even though the end result is almost holographic.
Anyone else ever go through this? I feel like I'm ready for a 12 step program!
How does one settle on one stone?

:errrr:

Just curious, why would you want to???

Wink

Time will cure you of this. Trust that it will pass. May take little bit of time, but slowly one day you'll realize it's just diamond. Until then, nothing will stop this train.

More cowbell?

(Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)

You'll find something that makes your heart sing. Maybe lots of somethings that make your heart sing and your palms sweat. I can't imagine finding just one diamond to complete me.

God I love the responses! :appl: I feel so much better knowing that it will end - but not quite yet, please!
Something about waiting for that box to arrive then sitting down in a quiet place in the sun to open it : ) Then the loupe.
I love them all : )

ps. does the fever usually end before, or after you go bankrupt?

Please be sure to wear a pair of good sunglasses when you go sit in the sunlight to play with diamonds. Really well cut ones literally can cause a corneal flash burn!

The good news is that eventually you will find the one that charms you with a perfect-for-you combination of faceting, color, size, and price. Until that time, have fun browsing and obsessing!

Here's a quote from Aldous Huxely who believed that we love gemstones because they remind us of our dreamworld.
" Precious stones are held to be precious, because they remind human beings of the "Other World". There is a special kind of beauty, which we say is 'transporting'. The adjective is well chosen; for it is literally true that certain spectacles do carry away the mind of the beholder, carry it out of the everyday world of common, conceptualized experience into the magical "Other World" of nonverbal visionary experience."

It could be that the search for the perfect diamond is actually a spiritual quest.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. =)

I always thought I was of the mindset to have the 1 ring to rule them all. The 1 perfect diamond and setting that would make me think of nothing else.

And then learned that I actually need 5 rings to rule them all. Now I'm perfectly content and happy.

But seriously if you are draining the funds in your bank account perhaps you should step back.

There is no ending for me, it's always evolving and always fun :)

HI:

Why, yes there is. It is called Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire fever. :saint:

cheers--Sharon

A good cure for the bug is to buy a few pieces of diamond jewelry you love and rotate wearing them. I wear one for a while and then put it away..and then on to the next. Sometimes I won't wear a piece for a year or more...and then it feels new again, thrills and all, and no money spent.

Wise words... :twirl:

I like that. Great philosophy!
Instead of buying one big[ger] stone I've kept the last two and have one on the way. They are a 0.90 Assher and two O.60 RB, one is a True Heart [arrives in 2 weeks]. I'm going to call the two RB's "The Twins". Of course the Asscher isn't much bigger looking that the twins face up, so maybe I have triplets, two well-rounded and one a little square.

The original intent was to buy a tiny sparkle - like 0.20ct. to wear with stacking rings - that was almost 2 months ago and I've been star struck ever since. Even my friend finally bought a diamond because she caught the fever from me but my other friends run away when I mention the word "diamond".
My dream diamond is an Asscher around 1.20 max, D or E, VVS with a perfect stoplight shape and EX cut. THAT may take a while.

No, I haven't gone to the poorhouse yet... and anyway...these are investments!! :naughty:

I was obsessed until I had kids. Then the obsession died down and now it's more like a mild interest. I think for a lot of us, it's the thrill of the hunt more than the actual finished product.

I don't know about them being investments...especially if you are paying retail. I have had diamond fever for a few years now, but other than my e-ring, I buy only estate items and when I tire of them, I sell them on ebay and even then, I take a loss. On the other hand, if you mean investment compared to other items, such as designer handbags or shoes, then yes, they will yield a better return.

I meant investments in my happiness : )

Definitely the thrill of the hunt for me!

I wonder if I could get them to cut it into an Asscher? :appl:

Jimmieanne:

for me it was:

1) when I had two kids in college, one private, one pubic college and neither one was smart enough to get a scholarship ;-)

2) when my husband looked at me at said ''alrighty, ENUF"

2) when I realized that there's always a better setting.. but it's not worth it..

mostly kidding ..I am not sure I ever lost my diamond lust..because I still have it, I just have to temper it with the expenses of life.

I'd die for a 2carat stone!

:appl:

Probably once you settle on a stone, you will be happy to window shop for a while, perhaps for a long while. You may even lose your keen interest for a spell.
That's how it works for me.

As a matter of fact, I did find a stone! I mean THE stone. Just this week. I've had it for two days and could not be happier. As soon as I saw it I felt a shift in the force field.
Now I can proceed to "setting fever"... :appl:

We need pictures and details - then on to settings!

I don't think I would be able to buy/return stones - too much work for no reason. I rather figure out what I want and then buy once and be done with it. Seems like the buying/returning process wastes your own time/money and also the vendor's.

I have figured out what I want which is a gigantic and beautiful OEC and a gigantic and beautiful OMC both in high colors. Then I set out to look for them.

I like your philosophy!

Two months ago on a whim I started looking for a thin stacking ring with a little diamond in it on Amazon...and here I am on Pricescope chatting up rocks and getting an education. It's a whole new world. I got deeper and deeper into the diamond world and ended up with an Asscher, which I had never heard of before and a couple of pair of earrings, a H&A for my daughter and 2 RB. Hey! The buying wasn't much trouble at all  and the returns didn't cost anything. I imagine my vendor came out ahead! It was a win-win for both of us. Only I got the best of the deal...I got diamonds but the vendor only got $$$ :loopy:

I've posted these on other threads, but happy to share again!
I'm looking at rather simple low set basket settings so far.
The stone is a 6.43mmx6.41mm G/VVS2

Wow beautiful stone.
Last thing I need- a new, overwhelming desire for a square cut.
That's the problem with diamond fever.... It's catching!!

Very beautiful - thanks for sharing your pictures!

Sorry!
I am hoping to stay off pricescope for a while because I think I might be in recovery :saint:
But isn't the rule of thumb that you must have at least one stone of each cut?
