Is the setter/jeweller just not skilled enough?

Hi All,

Wondering if I can get some advice from you guys. I bought the Gabriel and Co 4181 setting that Darthkim has for my cushion and I went to Toronto on Saturday to get the setter to mount it (this setter had a fair bit of good reviews on PS) and found out he couldn’t do it! He said the prongs were the “wrong” type and that he told me to get the princess type prongs or else he can’t mount my setting onto my cushion since it won’t be sturdy! Is he right? Do I have to change the prongs? Or is um not skilled enough to work with a cushion as I find a princess type prong would look really gross on a cushion! My cushion is practically a perfect square as it’s 1:1.01 ratio. When I ordered the setting the manufacturer had the diamond dimensions and knew it was a cushion! I am tempted to ship my setting and diamond back to who I bought the setting from to mount for me! I am having problem finding a jeweller that can handle cushions where I live and it seems Toronto too!

I don’t have any pictures with me as it’s home but it’s exactly like Darthkim’s but envision a cushion instead and I will post pictures of the setting tonight. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/1-3-isee2-h-a-on-tiffany-novo-replica.95624/

I’m hesitant to second guess a setter who can see the mounting when I can’t because there are a lot of issues at play. In concept, it’s not a problem to set a cushion in a 4 prong peg style setting like that. Whether or not there’s a problem in your situation I’ll leave up to him. By all means a setter has the right and even the obligation to decline to do jobs that he feels are going to be insecure and I count it as a good sign that they would rather lose a job than do one where they feel that they or you won't be satisfied with the results. Have another setter take a look at it and see if you get similar advice.

Personally I would never take my ring to someone who wasn''t comfortable doing the job. Whether it''s just THAT setter or a bigger problem that NO setter will tackle is another question.

I would send it back to where you bought it from and let them deal with it. If it isn''t the right setting they can get a new one.

I know! I really appreciated how he declined my job vs doing it without me being happy about it later on! Only problem with finding another setter is I live in a very small city and we''ve got less than a handful of setters

I should have had a few setters appointmentss all lined up for backup but he was one of the ones folks went to here on PS ''sigh'' I don''t know where I can find a good jeweller. One setter in my local area said he will do it but...now I am wondering if he is being truthful with me. If the Toronto jeweller don''t encounter cushions much is the local guy doing it for the money??

Having it set by the vendor of the mounting or the diamond (or both)is good advice.

Try PH Design who is located in downtown Toronto. I have been to several jewelers around Toronto (even the recommended ones on PS). PH did the best job.
