Is my Asscher table size too large?

Hello,

I recently bought an asscher e-ring from my local jeweler and now that i've been researching more about it's dimensions, i'm wondering if I made a bad choice. I paid a lot of attention to the color and clarity but not so much the cut because the GIA lab reports don't really say much on that and the jeweler wasn't super familiar with what to look for in asscher cuts. I only saw a few asschers since my jeweler said her vendors didn't have many they could send her in the price range I was working in. I guess I didn't see enough of them to know what a glassy asscher would look like but after reading a bunch of threads saying that a large table can have that effect, I've been second guessing the stone. Anyway here are the dimensions according to the GIA lab report. I paid $5500 for the stone. Did I make a poor choice? Sorry I don't have any pics or more dimensions at the moment.

Carat 1.0
Color F
Clarity VS1
Table 72%
Depth 66%
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Good

Technically yes but if you love it then that's ok.
It can still be very bright.

Do you really love the stone stp? Does it make your heart sing (so cliche)? IMO, if its not returnable then quite worrying about
it and just appreciate it.

I really do like the stone but being the perfectionist that I am, I started researching more details about asschers after i had already given the go ahead to my jeweler on the stone and setting...that's how I found this forum. I did stretch my budget a bit to step up to a stone that had great color and no visible imperfections in the table area so I thought I had made a great choice. I think it looks fantastic but it does eat at me a bit that it's probably not as firey as it could be. You're probably right; I should just be happy with it because I'm sure my g/f will be more than taken with any ring I present to her. On the plus side, my jeweler does offer a 100% value trade up policy so I could always move into a bigger/better stone in the future. But knowning how sentimental my g/f is, I doubt she would ever want to part with the original stone I give her haha :D

I am sure your girlfriend will love it because of what it means.

That said, you don't *have* to settle, you can see about an exchange. No harm if it matters to you :))

Did she ask for an asscher?

I'm sorry...I was assuming you were a female or I probably wouldnt have asked you if it made your heart sing
:loopy: .

I guess my main concern with that stone is that it looks see-through in your second picture. That means there
is probably some leakage. I must say I am by no means an asscher expert. (Karl_K the above poster is though.)
You didnt happen to get an aset image of it did you? Asschers are tricky stones to buy even for experienced
diamond people.

if you love it- then keep it! You GF will loved it because it is a beautiful stone and its what you picked out for her..

I am a perfectionist like you- and there is always something you will find out there that is bigger- better- etc.

The crown height looks fairly reasonable so its not a total flat top.
I would guesstimate it is close to 10% which helps.
The p3 angles are good which is a good sign.
Looks contrasty which isn't a bad thing if its bright enough.
That is all I can tell from the pictures which isn't much.

Does it dance when you move it around?
As you slowly move it back and forth and side to side you should see a play of light as facets fire and go dark.
With the large table they will be mostly large events with some smaller events in the windmill area.

Do you have a return policy? If you do, use it. I know Karl is trying to make lemonade out of lemons, but overall I wouldn't keep that stone.

Does she want an asscher? Why did you decide on an asscher?

Gypsy & Dreamer D:
My g/f didn't ask for an asscher specifically. I did ask her if she preferred a round or square stone but she didn't have a preference. I looked at some princess cuts at first but I thought they didn't show much depth. The rounds were nice but I really wanted some type of square cut stone and liked the asschers because of the classic art deco look they have. So here I am. I guess I should have seen more stones and waited until I had all the info I need to make a good choice.

I'll have to see about the return policy. The jeweler is a family friend that I've known since high school which is why I went to her in the first place. I'm sure she will be accommodating and there is a 100% value trade up policy so we'll see. Thanks for giving me your honest opinions though.

Karl K:
The stone is very clear and bright but I don't think the light dances around in it as much as it should but then again I've only seen a few in person so my eye isn't trained on what to look for. It's pretty much like you say, large flashes and I need to move the ring a good amount to achieve those. The windmills do flash quite a bit however.

A well cut smaller tabled asscher with a high crown will give you more small and med. flashes that are more frequent.

FYI stp...Karl designed this cut (unfortunately its not in your size!)

I've linked you to some of GOG asschers videos. They should help you to figure out what to look for when looking
for a well cut asscher. You can compare yours to the videos and see what you think.

There are more....these are just to help you get more familiar with the look of asschers. Mind you that some of the
asschers are better performers than others in the videos.

Here are other "square" cuts of diamonds although I do agree that asschers have an art deco feel (emerald cuts too).

Okay well. Here are my thoughts.

Asscher face up small for the carat weight. Are very hard to shop for and are very hard to keep clean, and when dirty they do not perform. I own a very lovely asscher as the center for my engagement stone. I would NEVER recommend anyone buy an asscher for someone who doesn't specifically want one.

I would take this stone back. And start from scratch.

Take your lady to a nice lunch date and then follow that up by a trip to a good store in your area with a lot of different stone shapes and settings.

SEE what she likes and what looks best on her hands. Deco is great, but she didn't say Deco. And even with Deco you can get a gorgeous Old European Cut in a square fishtail setting that would know both your socks off.

You jumped in too soon. I get being excited. But try to get a REFUND (not a trade in) with this vendor.

It's time to start over. The best place to start is to see things on her hand and listen to her.

I highly recommend you go to Tiffany and try on the Novo Cushion and the Lucida. Those are both types of square stones that aren't step cut. Then also try on some emerald cuts and if they have an asscher in, try those on. Also try on some rounds. And play with settings. If they have them, also cry on some oval and pear shaped solitaires and princesses as well.

Spend the time to make sure you have seen her face with each possibility and that you've seen each look on her hand.

Then come back and we can help you find the right look for her.

Taking her on a blinf date won't ruin your surprise> it will only heighten her anticipation of it. You will both have a great day together and then you will have more information, and she'll have so many possible options swimming in her head she'll be dying to see what you chose for her ultimately.

I know Karl's post is about 2 years old but if you've been looking for the perfect asscher, then I'm sure you've checked out all the posts like I have. After TEN years of looking, I found THE ONE - hopefully you will in less time! :D I just want to encourage that you should trust what makes sense for you (price, performance, etc.) and figure out what means more to you...does it mean a lot to you that it's close to a Royal Asscher - It seems that a lot of posters are stuck on small tables and particular dimensions but not saying they want this branded cut most likely because of the price. Even antique square cuts can be expensive depending on of course a myriad of factors. What about budget? How much are you willing to fork over for that perfect stone? I did an extensive search with a west coast jeweler who is also certified to sell Royal Asschers and I had them bring in generic square cuts and I wasn't satisfied even staying in the 20k budget; they were either too low in clarity or too warm for my taste. I think they were hoping I'd buy a RA and I halted my search for awhile. All that searching paid off for me - as a very successful NYC jeweler told me - "...there will always be diamonds". Recently, I was able to find high clarity, more than half the cost, excellent color, vg polish and symmetry - the trade off? Well, people here may not like my large table and high 50's depth but it works for me because: it flashes and sparkles in any light BECAUSE OF THE EXECUTION OF THE CUT AND POLISH!!! Plus the high clarity and color combined! It's everything all in play - like love at first sight - you'll know it when you see it and you don't need to second guess youself or ask anyone! Oh, and btw, it looks like a 3 carat and costs less than one which is what I wanted. So go out there and find the one YOU will fall in love with, for the one you love, or for yourself because you deserve it. I wanted an Asscher type because of its uniqueness and when it was created - the year my late Father was born. It also helped to buy one from a jeweler (female) that just loves them!! It seems like a lot of estate Asschers are on the east coast where I found mine. Good luck and I hope this helps! :wavey:
