Is my alexandrite ring real or fake ?

Good evening , i was wondering if you can help me to know if my alexandrite ring is real my grandmother gave it to me before she died she said she got it when she was in turc it change cOlors from green to yellow and red that is slightly purple

I tried to many times but they all told me there are no pro that can appraise it for me in my country they said i have to fly to russia where they got the alexandrite gemstone and i live in a whole another continent

visit the Multicolour website and look at their for sale alexandrite stone that have a good color change. Compare your stone to those. Only if your stone compares very much like the Multicolor pictures would it be worthwhile to have the stone appraised. It is possible that some other country besides Russia might have an appraiser that could verify the stone.

Typically an Alexandrite changes from a green blue teal colour in daylight lighting to a purple with red colour under incandescent light. Your gem doesn’t seem to be showing these colours.
there is also colour change Chrysoberyl that is green / green yellow to brownish, not strictly speaking Alexandrite. There is also colour change garnet. Plus there are multiple types of synthetic Alexandrite.
without an appraisal from a lab / gemologist unfortunately no one can tell from a photo.

Before you bother with an appraisal, you might want to consider getting a lab report. There are reputable labs on multiple continents, so maybe that would be an option. Where are you located? If you are located in Turkey, the closest labs would likely be those in Europe, like SSEF - Swiss Gemological Institute, Gubelin and GRS are the 3 that come to mind right now.

Merhaba. I have lived in Turkey on and off for many years and still have a holiday villa there. I can tell you with my hand on heart that I have seen lots of "alexandrite" for sale in Turkey and not one piece has been genuine. I am so sorry to tell you that. From your photos, I would highly suspect this is not alexandrite. The fact jewellers are telling you to send your ring to Russia just shows how little they know about Alex. My suggestion is that if you really want to know, you can send it to Switzerland to the Gubelin lab to get a report. If you look at my avatar, that's an Alex and if you want more information, I have written a thread on how you can tell if your alex is real or not.

If it was bought in Turkey, I suspect it might be gem diaspore. This is found in SW Turkey and marketed under the name of 'Zultanite'. It also shows colour-changing properties a little like alexandrite. Here's a pic of a cut stone from an eBay auction:


Those colours do look similar to your stone.

I don't think it is @Nick_G. I went to the Diaspore/Zultanite mine in Turkey and own quite a few pieces but the clarity tends to be less included. Interestingly, I don't think you can buy it in Turkey (although that may have changed in recent years) because the mine owners teamed up with a supplier so most of the stones went to the UK and US for sale. My info is several years old though so it may well have changed.

I can see what you mean. Mine tend to be more of a sort of pastel pale apple green then going to pale peach. A bit like a washed out Alex lol

There are only two things I can tell you:
1. People here in Europe have been going to shop replicas and all kinds of other fake items for decades. Jewelry and even gold have been on top of this list.
2. It looks fake. Not only it does not look like an Alex, it looks almost plasticy to me. Probably something man made, synth.
To really know though you need a lab report and/or appraiser. Search the net for one.
Pretty ring though! Enjoy it either way with the sentiment.)

Why do you need to fly to Russia to have an alexandrite appraised? Alexandrites have been mined in several countries, and usually the question is, synthetic or chrysoberyl? In Russia, they have own accredited labs, I have heard that that of Moscow state University is good. But I won’t go there to appraise an Alex.
Take it from the person who was born and spent the childhood in the city where they used to mine the first alexandrites.
1) most of real Russian alexandrites were mined out before the revolution.
2) I would fail to name a family where at least one grandma did not leave “an alexandrite” to her granddaughter. My great-grandma bought “hers” before the revolution, using the money from their first harvest. When an appraiser here announced, “synthetic sapphire”, he said I “took it courageously”, lol.
