To the experts out there: Is it true that GIA/AGS will certify laser treated diamonds?

If so, will the certification document that the diamond has been laser treated. Are holes/ channels possible to spot with a Loupe or are we in microscope + experienced appraiser territory?

Hi,

Yes GIA or AGS will document laser drilled stones. They will provide a plot depicting the entry point of the laser. Most stones that have been subjected to this type of treatment are more likely to be sold sans GIA or AGS documents. The drill holes can be filled now so it is even tougher to find them. A loupe can detect a drill hole but they are easy to miss. Cindy

Thanks Cindy. Since the FTC does not enforce disclosure I was a little concerned.

GIA instead of stating 'laser drilled' in the comments section writes 'laser drill hole' in the key to symbols. This note is always the first of the list, even if it's not the most important.
