I''m looking at a few diamonds and have a decision to make. I can choose between a few H, SI1, right around 1.0XX carats. Or I can go up to about 1.23XX carats, also H, SI1, for about 1600 dollars more. I know this is a judgment call but wanted to get other opinions.

Is it worth it to go up or it''s not worth the difference in price?

I would be able to see a bit of a difference in size. Have you looked at that thread up top about size that Diamondseeker2006 started, that might give you an idea of what the difference will look like.

What are the mm measurements? -- a stone of 1 carat can face up looking like a 1.2 carat. $1600 dollars might be worth it to some people, but all that matters is if it''s worth it to YOU. If that $1600 is hard to come by, and the 1 carat looks big enough, then it''s probably not worth it. But if you can easily afford it AND size is important, then I''d say ''go for it.'' To me, once you get to the 1 carat range, an extra 0.5mm is not noticable once set, especially if the stones are not being compared side by side. A simple test you can do is draw the shape of the 1 carat and 1.2 carat diamonds in exact mm''s on opposite sides of a non-lined sheet of paper. Do not label them. Go away and have someone flip the sheet around. Come back and see if you can tell which is which.

I guess it depends on whether your gal would rather have a larger size. If size is important to her than I think a 23% increase in carat weight is noticeable and perhaps worth it.

Size matters....period. Buy the larger one now before the prices go up again.

Compare the diameter measurements of both too. Differences in cut can change the spread of a diamond, whether it''s more shallow or deep can make it look bigger or smaller. I hope that sentence makes sense

Yes, this is an important point. I would just pay the extra money if you have it available to spend on a diamond. There will be a noticeable difference in size... Especially if the girl has a small finger.

I would go for the 1.23. I went from a 1.02 to a 1.23 and could DEFINITELY see the difference. It was a fuller look, it looked like a 1.5. It also had a great cut.

But as mentioned already, check the diameters. I was called in to look at a 1.37 during my upgrade search, but when I got there my sales lady had checked the diameter and it was only 6.90, so she kept searching and the 1.23 I ended up getting was a 6.98. I got really lucky that my lady checked this for me since I hadn't been on PS long enough to know about diameters. (I actually had 2 people looking and the second lady found the first one's diameter oversight)

It's truly amazing the education you can get on this forum! By the way....H - SI1 is a great choice, eyeclean and icywhite! With fl. of course...

Good luck on your search!

Skippy, that picture you posted was a PERFECT size comparison for this post!!!
