given a standard setting as pictured below, would it be possible to kite set it like in the 2nd picture (the big one) or would it be better to keep it in the standard orientation (small picture)?

Which do you like better? Also, would kite setting it be more dangerous for the diamond?

TIA!

Both ways are secure. You might expect more long term damage near the girlde when "kite" set.

David, thanks for the quick response. Since I''m getting a very "plain" setting, I was hoping to differentiate my ring in some way, but I would hate to damage my diamond. hmmmm. I might need to reconsider.

I don''t think the second one looks bad, but I prefer the standard way.

Thank you Diamond Dana for your input. I think I will stick to the traditional orientation. I wouldn''t want to experiment with how well the diamond would keep up with wear and tear (and I''m rough on my hands.) I will try that some other time down the line.

It would be safe if you reoriented the head, I think: setting it with the corners between the prongs would put you at risk for chipping. But, for what it''s worth, I much prefer it the "traditional" way: I don''t think it looks plain at all! Classic and elegant. Then again, I might be biased.

If you change the head to set like a kite. I think it would be safe. I have set princess cut diamonds that way before.

In a princess stone I probably wouldn''t kite set unless the prongs are covering each of the corners. You have a reduced risk with an asscher, but the risk is still there. It''s probably fine, but most people tend to knock their rings from the side and if you don''t have a prong covering a corner it is at a higher risk.

Personally, I like the look of traditional set better, but many think that it looks much bigger kite set and it is definitely something different or unique that not everyone has.

No matter what you decide, insure your ring!!! Then you don''t have to worry about it.

Circe, Yekutiel, and kcoursolle - Based on your recommendations (thank you) I am going to keep it traditionally set. If down the line I decide to get anything kite set, I will make sure the set head is changed so not to risk chipping right now, I don't want to risk unnecessarily chipping the diamond, and yes, as soon as I get it set (this weekend) I will get it appraised and insured.

ETA: I wanted to thank the other posters (David and Dana) again as well.
