Is it possible to re-cut a bad OEC?

Hi. I will admit that I am looking on EBAY at diamonds. I can not afford to update my ring at this time without selling it first, so I thought that I would look into alternatives. One thought that I had was this:

Could a poorly cut OEC be re-cut? Some the the diamonds I see look just gawd awful! How can they really tell the color and clarity through such a poorly polished stone? I had read that BGD re-cut someone else''s diamond, but in a another thread I read that diamond cutters prefer not to do this.

If the price is right, would it be worth it?

depends on the stone. So the cutter have to view it personally. Some stones can be cut without significant loss in carat weight or diameter, some cannot. Also there is risk involved such as the stone shattering under the wheel, and the cutter will not take responsibility when that happen.

It very much depends, not all diamonds are even suitable candidates for a recut, also recutting isn't without risk. Should the stone break or disintegrate/ shatter whilst cutting the owner normally has to take the loss.

I feel this is a very risky undertaking, my advice would be to save and wait until you can afford to buy what you want.

BGD recut my grandmothers OEC but I would not recommend buying one to have it recut. That sounds too risky. My grandmother''s OEC had a chip and was abraded. It started out as 7.35mm and went to 7mm. 1.58 carat to 1.27 carat. There was a noticeable size difference. If you buy a poorly cut stone a lot will have to be taken off to make it right so it would not make sense to do it.

Brian just recut my RB. He wanted to see the spec on it first to decide if it was a stone he thought he could work with. I am buying other stones and a setting from him so I don''t know if he gave me a deal of the recut fee but I was shocked how reasonable it was

Would it be possible for you to post that "ballpark" fee for me Christie? I know that it will just depend on the stone and cut, but it would help me to see if it is in the budget. I''m not looking to buy anything crazy that is a really big investment already...just looking for something different and I have fallen in love with the OEC''s.

Thank you, Lorelei. I''ve checked them out, but not in great detail. This may take some time!

Hi,

I don''t know what your budget is, but I saw this and thought I''d add the link for you just in case you were interested. I''m no expert so perhaps others could share their opinions on this one as well.

OEC

Thanks Gemma! I am already watching this one! Can anyone tell me what their thoughts are on it? There is only one picture and I emailed the seller to see if they could get me some more pics. No answer yet. The current bid on it is MUCH lower than the asking price, but there are still nearly 3 days left.
