Is it possible to determine whether a gem is real by the feel? I'm told no but some just feel so much like plastic!

Do natural faceted colored gemstones feel like plastic? I tap them and they are obviously not plastic but I can't get past how fake they feel. Cut clarity color etc etc but no feel?
