Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like peridot?

All of the ones listed on Gemburi are quite green-ish, and peridot like. Does chrysoberyl look peridot-ish in real life?

Some less saturated chrysoberyl looks like peridot or sphene. A saturated gem looks more like the gymshoes I posted on the second page of my thread. I have never seen a peridot or sphene that looks like the color of those gymshoes. Perhaps they do exist, but I have never seen one.

Here is the video still of my chrysoberyl to give you an idea how to read Tan's videos.

Thank you TL! That picture is invaluable, especially because I can now compare it to your shots.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

Some might and some might not. It depends on the quality of the chrysoberyl and peridot. A fine quality chrysoberyl should have colour and luster that is distinctive, that can never be mistaken for a peridot.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

It is important to note that chrysoberyl has far far superior hardness than a sphene or peridot, both with are rather soft

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

Looking at chrysoberyl on different sites, there seems to be a lot of variation in color. Is that almost neon color that a lot of Tan's seem to have most desirable? Whenever I look at his animations, I'm so busy looking at the sparkly colors that I have a hard time focusing on windows, cut, etc. Ooh look, shiny....

Chrysoberyl comes in a range of colours from yellow to green and all shades in between. As with 99% gemstones, the higher the saturation, the more desirable it is.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

Earlier in the day there was a discussion on the forum about modifiers in pink tourmaline, which was considered more desirable, yellow or blue. I guess that's what was at the back of my mind with chrysoberyls. I've admired the range of colors, but is, for example, a yellow-green or greenish-yellow more desirable than something that looks straight-up yellow or green? What about the ones that look golden, or are they less desirable because they have a bit of brown in them?

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

This is my take on it. The modifier for greenish yellow is grey. The modifier for golden yellow is brown. I think when there is an equal amount of grey in the greenish yellow as there is brown in the golden yellow, it probably does not make a difference in price, all other things are equal, and we're talking about the same gem species. I do think greenish yellow colored diamonds are more valueable than golden yellows if all else is equal, but let's not go there.

I prefer greenish yellows, and others prefer golden yellows. I think that is a preference.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

With pink tourmalines, it is a little different because, well....it is supposed to be pink, hence the name “pink tourmaline”. Therefore, a pure pink of the highest saturation is highly desired.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

I like the greenish yellows a little more than the brownish yellows. There are other stone types which I'd rather explore if I was lookng for a golden or brownish yellow color.

Thanks TL, Chrono and IndyLady, that helps a lot. It's tougher for me to see grey in some stones than it is brown, I'm not sure why

Are highly saturated pinks more lilac than peach when it comes to gemstones? Is this true for more than tourmalines?

Definitely. If I were in the market for a chrysoberyl (and not an alex or vanadium chryso, but a green/yellow one), I'd specifically seek out one that looks like a peridot, because that's the color that appeals to me. The yellow and neon ones don't really do it for me.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

So jstar, you would prefer a yellowish green then. Peridots are a yellowish green, where green is the primary color.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

Thank you, TL, for posting a picture. Now I have a reference point.
I once saw a peridot that was apple-green. I understand that technically it is still yellow-green but there was so little yellow in it. I never saw a chrysoberyl that would look similar to it.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

I was infected by the chrysoberyl fever and bought this from Tan recently:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWNX:IT

I remembered TL's experience with still pictures and thought this one looks close to that bright color. Well, in person, it is not that bright and I can see hint of brown, the green tone is not as obvious as vendor pictures. blah...

I have since ordered another chryso from Tan's website, let's see how that one looks.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

Since I got my stone, I only found one on Tan's site that comes close in color. It was sold. I haven't found any of his latest material to be that saturated. Keep an eye out though. I hope your new one turns out to be nice Yingh.

Re: Is it just me, or does some chrysoberyl look like perido

Hmmm....I agree that from viewing the video, the pear is sparkly but if you look at the body colour, it isn’t that eye popping neon saturation. I hope you’ll find something more to your liking soon.

100%. Although I really prefer the bluish mint green of a vanadium chrysoberyl, or the green/purple of alexandrite (that's why I'm not in the market for a "regular" chrysoberyl and probably won't ever be).

There are yellowish green chrysoberyls. They're just not very common.
