Try cutting it with a sharp piece of Jadeite; if it doesn't scratch it at all, it definitely has a hardness that is pretty close to that of Sapphire. Not many stones can get close in terms of hardness; perhaps only a black Diamond may be the only other possibility as we are'nt considering other dissimilar colored stones. Of course we're talking only about natural stones. Do not use Diamonds or those special grade Tungsten Carbide knives, which may even cut Sapphire, to test the hardness.
P.S.: When you do this type of desctructive testing, select a spot where any possible damage is visibly minimised.
