FI and I are contemplating this, mostly because we are getting married at a historic site, and any damage caused by any of our guests is our financial responsibility (they put that in the contract we signed). It''s the liability portion of the wedding insurance that appeals most to us.

Has/is anyone purchased wedding insurance and have you needed it? Or does it mainly buy peace of mind?

I''m pretty sure we''ll be getting wedding insurance, too, I''m just waiting until we''ve got all our big vendors booked so we can price it accurately. We''re getting married at a historic building in a state park, and a couple years ago during a budget crunch the state actually closed the park for a few days...so I wouldn''t want to be stuck paying the caterer for nothing if that were to happen to us! (Nobody anticipates such a thing happening again, but what''s $250 on top of everything else, for the peace of mind?)

It mainly buys peace of mind otherwise the insurance company would go out of business! That said, if all you want is the liability portion, I would first check with your homeowners/renters insurance to see if your personal liability coverage there would cover you. Probably not, but worth a check first.

And wouldn''t the venue have insurance that covers themselves if it''s a historic site?

it''s never a bad idea to cover your butt, if you know what i mean. while i''m on here, i''m going to semi-threadjack and beg everyone to PLEASE ALSO GET TRAVELER''S INSURANCE! DH and i missed the cutoff for checkin for our honeymoon by five minutes, and they wouldn''t let us board. thankfully, someone at the airline took mercy on us and pulled some strings, so we wound up only paying the fee to change your flight, but the first lady we were talking to was saying we''d have to buy new tickets for $9000!!!! there''s no way we could''ve done this, so we would''ve had no honeymoon, and none of what we had already paid for would''ve been reimbursed to us had we missed our trip entirely because we didn''t have insurance on the trip. okay, end of threadjack!

Well, I read my contract more carefully, and they don''t require liability insurance at either the ceremony or reception venues, which are both historic buildings, so that''s good (homeowner''s insurance won''t cover for a special event held elsewhere). We are responsible for any damages to the facilities by our guests, but we''re only having 40 guests, all family, so that''s not gonna happen.

It does say it has no further financial obligation to us if they are "unable to perform" due to an act of God, labor dispute, goverment requisitions (this is a national park) or other causes behone their control. Hmmmmm. Peace of mind indeed. Time to discuss further with FI.
