Hi again, you must be getting sick of my questions, but I promise I am nearly there.

I was talking to the consulant I am meeting with on Sat to finalise a setting (Tiff style, 6 prongs, set low), and I mentioned that I really don''t want a band thicker than 2mm, and she mentioned that I wouldn''t really want to go smaller than 2.5mm for security sake. I don''t think she was saying they couldn''t do it, she just said she wouldn''t advise it for a stone of the size I am looking for. I am going to purchase either a 0.81ct or 0.75ct stone, and have looked at other bands at 2mm and they are perfect. I have seen other settings at this size.

Is it safe to go 2mm? I have my heart absolutely set on a thin band. I have thinnish fingers and the current ''promise ring'' I wear now is a 1.8mm and I don''t want to go much bigger.

Please help! Do any of you have such thin bands, and if you are an ''expert'', is this possible?

there are plenty of folks with bands 2mm, or even less around here. I think harriet''s 3+ carat stone sit''s on a band that is 1.5mm or 1.7mm. That said, i think it''s important to do what your designer/custom person feels comfortable with, so if they are recommending 2.5 then that''s what you should go with. trying to convince them to do something different probably won''t change their mind and most likely will just make them frustrated with you as a client who *thinks they know more than they do* if you get what I mean.

I''m no expert though

I''m no expert, and I hope they chime in here, but though your stone is a great size, I don''t think it is so large that a 2mm band won''t hold it up. I have a friend with a 2mm band whose diamond is 1.25ct. There are girls on here with 2 carat diamonds and 1.2mm pave bands!

I dunno - I think you''ll be fine, and I think 2mm is a great width for your diamond size.

Thanks guys. I totally understand both your points. I don''t want to go marching in there demanding a smaller band than they recommend, but I would like to nicely point out that I have seen lots of settings with larger stones with tinsey bands, and maybe they could come up with a design to incorporate a thinner band, but with the security then recommend. She said we could discuss it, I am pretty sure she is open to thinning it out, but I didn''t want to go into the appointment without some ''evidence'' I guess of smaller bands. I dunno? Maybe they prefer to stick with a stock setting if possible, and that''s what they encourage. Oh well, I am sure it will all work out.

I think 2mm would be fine in a platinum band. However, they would need to build in some height to the band to give it some structural integrity. I would only go as low as a jeweler feels comfortable with, so you might want to try another jeweler.

I have a largeish diamond set in a 2mm gold band, no problems with it to date, it seems fine.

I could physically hold my 185 pound butt off the ground with a 2mm band. Security should have nothing to do with it. This makes me think that the jeweler is trying to upsell you- but I cant be certain.

For security- go platinum. this is vital- MAKE SURE YOU PLATINUM BAND IS WELDED, NOT SOLDERED. This means that there is no 18K white gold solder holding your platinum band together. If this is what is happening, then yes, you may have some security issues. Otherwise, a weld means that there is no soft spot (solder seam) ANYWHERE on your ring.

If the .5 mm prongs can hold you fatty diamond in place, then a 2mm band should be able to not snap off your finger.

Good Luck.
