Interpretation of Tiffany garden bee

I really like the idea of the tiffany bee, but I like mixed metals. I've created an incredibly horrid mockup of what my interpretation would be for a rose cut Queen Bee pendant.

I'd use a light yellow rose cut pear for the body, bezeled in yellow gold. A black rose cut diamond for the head, also in yellow gold? Then the wings would be in white gold with several bead set diamonds as bling. I'd also really love a little crown on its head.

I'm attaching a pic of the mock up and of the original inspiration. Please give me your thoughts and opinions.

I changed the scale here a bit and moved the wings up.

I prefer the original. I'm not liking the black head.

Very interesting Uppy, the black gives it a bit of a contrast instead of blending all in. Not bad and I do like the crown. Much more of a Queen Bee with the crown. It would be interesting if the crown had a fleur de lis. Well maybe not, I guess it would be too busy.

Uppy,
It looks more like an angel, rather than a bee. I think it's the crown and black "face" that's throwing me off.

I have always thought sphenes would look really good for an insect pendant or brooch!

Here's a mock up with the face white.

Sphene. Never thought of that. Would it be too delicate to bezel?

I doubt anyone would risk bezeling a sphene. Prong set is fine.

I don't like the black head. That somehow ruins the look for me. I do love the Tiffany pendant, though! I'd just recreate it with all white diamonds.

Maybe it is just the proportions of the rose cut pear. Is it too skinny for a bee?

Here is the original tiffany and the JbEG pear I'm looking at.

yeah, sorry, I'm sort of thinking the same about the crown/black diamond...they make it look a bit too busy of a bee!

What about doing it all in yellow stones?

I think it is both the proportions and the colour. The proportions look more gown-like than a bee's rounded abdomen. Also, the different colour makes it look more gown-like with the diamond "wings" as contrast.

MC, I think the concept of all yellow is good. However, I'd do it in all yellow gold, with a white diamond as head and bead set in wings. I like the idea of the crown, but if it doesn't work it is okay. I'm wondering if DBL could get me a fancy yellow pear? It could be mounted pavilion up to look "rose cut."

Yellow stones with a white diamond for the head sounds really pretty!

Not my taste but hats off to you for creativity!

I blame a bad bee sting in middle school on my dislike for this necklace. I would like it better if it were a dragonfly. ;))

Much better idea!

I like your mock up, Uppy! I definitely prefer the non-black head though ... maybe a soft yellow stone? a FLY perhaps?
(hahaha!!! A FLY on a BEE!!! oh - I kill me!!! )

I like the wings set higher to avoid the angel look when they are set low. I LOVE the crown - I think that's the kind of detail that will make it stand out from the original Tiffany inspiration piece.

Is this pear too big to use as the bee body, if you were going yellow?

It's the missing thorax that is bothering me. If you add another stone in the middle, I think it will look more "bee-like" and less angel-like.

 Love it!!!

I just got off the phone with David discussing that exact stone. (He thinks you are a fabulous lady!) He's going to do a mock up for me, with either a FLY or ruby for the head. The wings are going to be much higher, coming out between the head and body.

Unfortunately, I don't think the crown is going to work due to the small size of the piece.

^^^^^^

Uppy!!! That's awesome news!!! How exciting - we both picked the SAME diamond!! wow - what are the odds??? If you go with DBL for this piece, just based on all the items I saw - you will be blown away by the finishing!! (please have a claw prong or two in there for me! :halo: )

I hope it works out for you because it sounds AWESOME!!!

Glad you are going with color for the head instead of black!

No claws. Bees don't have claws!! But there will be lots of milgrain. Think of it as pollen.

Love the direction your bee is going- that DBL pear is very pretty!! Just wondering if you'd consider a yellow gold head with 2 black diamond "eyes"? That way you'd have the black and yellow you originally were considering.
