I was checking out a diamond that I have under a 20x and 50x microscope.
I thought I will share some of the photos I took.

Its was quite difficult to get all the details in focus due to the very narrow depth of field from the lens.
Perhaps I could set it up better but I wasn''t an expert using it
=)

Experts : feel free to comment on the inclusions or on the images

top part of crystal and this cloud (i think at least according to the plot diagram)

that cloud looks like a long line of small crystals

Hey Mark, it''s good to see you having fun with your diamond and a microscope! It is definitely a challenge taking clarity photographs which provide accurate insight into the extent of the inclusions within a diamond... Depth of field has to be adjusted with every picture and quite often several times for the same inclusion since the inclusions travel through the diamond and thus reach different depths within the diamond. From a dealer perspective, it is definitely kind of cool to see this issue being acknowledged by a consumer

BTW: As I recall, the diamond you purchased is a "G" color, right? It might be helpful for other people reading the thread to know that the brownish-yellow body color of the diamond as seen within the pictures is a result of the light temperature of the incandescent bulbs used in the microscope and is not representative of the actual body color of the diamond.

hi todd
i am actually holding on to an I color diamond
however you are right. all that yellowish colour is from the incandescent bulbs.
i did not white balance the photos.
didnt have time for that and i just wanted to share with others what i saw under 50x

Cool photos!
To me they demonstrate clearly why 10 power is the agreed upon magnification to grade diamonds.
It allows one to view the imperfecion in context of the entire stone.

thanks for takikng the time HD! Really interesting pix!

That''s pretty cool! I think inclusions are amazing. They are sort of like the only witnesses to how the diamond was formed.

They''re alive to tell the story from millions, if not billiions of years ago.

Fascinating!

You''ve done a great job documenting those features.

do you have a VVS or an IF for comparison?

I''m curious about those ones.

(I want a microscope!)

Thanks for sharing!

the cloud almost looks like a very slowly escaping gas bubble. Which makes me wonder, are any of these inclusions hollow or are they all filled with something? BTW, does anybody else wonder what species of dinosaur is sitting atop of their finger

no problem

i am not a diamond inventory so i do not have those diamonds to view
besides, there wont be much to look for in an IF

even though there are technically inclusions in an IF at more than 10x
i will not even know where to begin looking !!!

when i am at 50x, its takes a long time to travel from one end of the diamond to the other end
i will be searching all day blindly for possible inclusions in an IF at 50x (even worse time wise if i used a 100x)

i think there are alot of type of clouds
i have seen a diamond provided by ID Jewelry that was cloudy and not sparkly.
it was an SI2 with clouds as a grade setter (look for my old thread posts)
those clouds in the SI2 must be like an explosion of crystals... far reaching and wide spread

i like that my diamond''s clouds is a very narrow thin band of crystals
localized clouds with minimal destructive flow to the light pattern is how i would describe them
(even though GIA drew a somewhat medium size oval in my plot charts)

haha
