Hello,

First let me say that this site is outstanding! I''ve been researching for about a week, and this is my first post, and I''m trying to decide between several great stones for an engagement ring, they appear to all be great, but I want as close to perfection as I can get (in relation to the stones cut and resultant beauty - I essentially want a stone that is just stunning).

My basic parameters:

Size: 1.2-1.25
Color: F or G
Clarity: VS1-VS2 (but will consider a really good SI1)
Cut: Round brilliant with a truly outstanding cut (HCA = 1-1.5 TIC, AGS0/GIA Ex, H&A)
Budget: ~10K

We also prefer the appearance of RB''s with slightly smaller arrows (LGF 77-80), and I''m a sucker for the BrillanceScope scores...

Here are the contenders:

1)
1.23 G VS1
GIA "Triple" Excellent
H&A
Width 6.91-6.94
Table 55.3%
Total depth 61.4%
Crown angle 34.5 (34.2-34.8)
Pavilion angle 40.8 (40.7-40.8)
Lower girdle facets 77%
Star facets 58%
HCA 1.2 ex/ex/ex/vg TIC
BScope Unknown
Link to Diamond #1

This stone looks great, though I''d prefer a light analysis (BS, ISEE2). It also has medium fluorescence, though I don''t think that will be an issue.

2)
1.197 F VS2
AGS000
H&A
Width 6.89-6.93
Table 55.7%
Total depth 60.6%
Crown angle 34.9 (34.7-34.9)
Pavilion angle 40.8 (40.7-40.8)
Lower girdle facets 79%
Star facets 52%
HCA 1.4 ex/ex/ex/vg TIC
BScope Unknown
Link to Diamond #2

Another great looking stone, though no light analysis (this is important to me), idealscope & ASET looks great.

3)
1.19 F SI1
GIA "Triple" Excellent
H&A
Width 6.86-6.89
Table 55%
Total depth 61.1%
Crown angle 34.2 (33.8-34.5)
Pavilion angle 40.8 (40.7-40.9)
Lower girdle facets 79%
Star facets 60%
HCA 1.0 ex/ex/ex/vg TIC
BScope VH1/VH3+/VH3+
Link to Diamond #3

This stones idealscope, etc. look great, BrillianceScope scores are off the chart, only issue is its an SI1... The link shows the inclusions, the stone is apparently eyeclean, but there would be one inclusion visible with the naked eye (at 6" or less I''m told), located on the outer edge (ms image 3 - see link), a prong may not cover it all. Maybe no big deal, but my fiancee had lasik recently, and I have 20/12 vision...

4)
1.22 F VS2
AGS000
H&A
Width 6.81-6.86
Table 55.3%
Total depth 62.3%
Crown angle 34.7 (34.5-34.8)
Pavilion angle 40.8 (40.6-41.1)
Lower girdle facets 77%
Star facets 50%
HCA 1.5 ex/ex/ex/vg TIC
Bscope VH2/VH3+/VH3
Link to Diamond #4

The BScope scores are outstanding, but the pavilion angle range is a little off (compared to the others), and their are a few minor anomalies in the lightscope pictures, which I assume are due to the slight variances in the cut (slightly offcenter, etc.). The total depth is also a little deep.

So there you have it, all input appreciated.

Thanks!

PS - I''d also like to thank Mr. Holloway for making his excellent HCA tool readily available, as well as the wealth of information I''ve gathered from the experts and users of this site. Thanks for taking the time to educate!

I like 3 and it seems like a great deal; I really didn''t notice the inclusion. The prong may cover that. I guess since you picked 3 from GOG could you go in and see them???

I think I would pocket the 2k and go with 3.
Id have to see it in person to decide myself if the inclusion was an issue but they do have a very good return policy. So all it would cost is a little shipping.

Alpine_21, welcome to the forum and thank for kind words.

Looks like you did your home work including avatar.

All these stones are practically Tolkowski cut. I''d go for the cheapest one too, SI1, but if inclusion will bother you then any of the others are just fine.

You honestly couldn''t go wrong with any of them.

#3 will save you some money, #1 is the biggest. Everything else would be splitting hairs.

Hi Alpine and welcome to PS!

I prefer VS to SI, but that''s personal preference. #2 is almost as big as #1 in diameter - #2 would be my first choice. #3 is more affordable, and appears eye-clean, so that may be a better choice for you if you are concerned about your budget.

Thanks for your responses!

Well, I''ve narrowed it down to stone #1 (G/VS1) and #3 (F/SI1). The light analysis for #1 was Bscope VH3/VH3+/VH1 & ISEE2 9.8 (WOW!), #3 scored a Bscope of VH1/VH3+/VH3+ & ISEE2 9.6 (another WOW!). I''ve ordered both to look at in person.

Please let us know your thoughts, we don''t often get someone lucky enough to compare stones!
