Yesterday I covered a client’s participation (as a vendor) at the IN quilt show and took lots of pics of the quilts entered. Thought I’d share here because I know there are quilters and sewists among us, and also because the theme this year was Women’s Issues, and those participants made small quilts or wall hangings displayed around the perimeters of the room. I thought they were all incredible! Quilts are an important piece of history and can involve a lot of emotion like any work of art. I find them fascinating, please enjoy some photos of this year’s entries!

(I can never get the photos to show up AFTER the text, sorry!)

Wow! Just wow! I have always loved quilts, but I am used to traditional quilts. These put a whole new meaning into them. Not that I will cease to appreciate the other quilts, of course. But these mind-blowing. Thanks, Monnie!

I’ll post a few more! I focused on non-traditional because those are what appeal to me most. Several traditionals in the “youth” category. One by a woman I have known since I was a child, a good friend of my mother’s.

@StephanieLynn I love the stories best! There is another very moving one about a man lost to cancer—the quilt is comprised of his dress shirts. I have to say it was an emotional experience for me yesterday; I had tears in my eyes several times, especially reading the women’s issues messages.

My mother has been a quilter for as long as I can remember, and I spent a lot of time growing up being around her and her friends quilting and going to quilt shows like this one. Each one is a work of art and tells a story, and can keep a loved one warm and cozy when you can’t be with them. To some I’m sure they seem a quaint old fashioned bit of Americana, and some primitive styles are, but to me they were part of my upbringing and represent the beauty of flyover country and the people therein.

One more thing: the geometry and precision of this artwork reminds me so much of what I love about jewelry and faceted gemstones and how they’re cut—the ones I’m most drawn to have jewel-like colors and very intricate designs!

What incredible masterpieces of art + craft + thought ... really wish I could see in person myself ... thank you so much for the wonderful photos!

(My personal favorite is the Symposium of Peace quilt, which I found reminiscent of Kandinsky and rather lyrical.)

I would like to own "Stars and Sparks" just because it is beautiful. I really do love quilts. I bought several heavily quilted baby quilts for my daughter before she was born. Just to hang, not to use. Now whenever one of my great-nieces in Israel has a baby I buy him or her a handmade Amish baby quilt so that he or she will have something truly authentic from the United States. I also gave my godson's first son a quilt made by this same woman. I cannot sew worth a darn, but I knit and hook rugs and appreciate work that is done by hand.

Thanks for posting these, Monnie! I love quilt shows. I've made a few quilts, but it turned out my mother was the real quilter in the family! These are absolutely stunning.

Speaking of my mother, as an immigrant, she would have loved that quilt with the envelopes, as do I.

Thanks, Monnie. I got excited that you were interested in Amish quilts and went looking for some of the quilts I had bought. I believe that these are among them, although the girls' quilts I bought may have been a different pink or salmon color, without the tan. And I ordered several different blue quilts throughout the years. Sometimes I just chatted with Connie via e-mail or on the phone. She may have done different quilts for me from time to time. I hope you can glance though the catalogue for pleasure. Every time I go in there I enjoy it. Just today I saw a crib quilt with yellow cats that I had never noticed before. I thought of some of our Pricescope kitty lovers!

@AGBF those are such sweet quilts. The horsey embroidered one looks a lot like the style of one I have that I believe my mother or her mother made. I’ll try to get a picture of it today to post so you can see. When I think of Amish quilts, I think of bold colors and simple patterns in black backgrounds. Not the case with those in the website you linked! Those are very beautiful. We have several populations of Amish and conservative Mennonite around the state; maybe quilt styles differ regionally although the people are the same/similar religions. I’m sure I’ll end up googling and going down a rabbit hole or two at some point today.

@missy I only stayed for about 45 minutes. I read quickly, zip through tours, and have a general tendency towards HSP which makes it difficult for me to spend a lot of time in one place because it can be too overwhelming for me. I am quick and thorough but then I’m out and onto something less stimulating...and as an introvert I need time to recharge alone after being in a building full of friendly folks who love to chat! I have a feeling most of the artists who enter or display their work at these shows are a lot like me—you never see them, only the vendors on the perimeters making a buck off the enthusiastic public! They are the talkers! Lol
