I've found a stone I like at a price I like, but the seller does his own certification. Obviously, I'm a little concerned. Will taking it to get it independently appraised make up for the lack of an independent certification?

If you just want to make sure that the diamond is as represented then yes.

You also can ask to send the diamond to AGS, or GIA, or AGA.

Many of the independant appraisers we recomend (see front page) would be more qualified than the staff at GIA.
I only issue independant certs on +.90ct diamonds and that is mainly to protect my own stores good name from some who would like to cut us down a notch.
