Have any of you used any independent appraisers in San Francisco that you would recommend? I am considering purchasing my first diamond via the internet and would like to utilize an appraiser during the 10 day return period to make sure the diamond checks out. There is an appraiser listed on the pricescope list of appraisers, Barbra Voltaire, in San Francisco. She appears to be working out of her house. Has anyone had any experience with her? How can you verify that someone is actually an appraiser and not just somenone claiming to be one just because they have all the equipment?

Barbra Voltaire is legit and great to work with. I''ve used her once and plan to go back again to her for a re-evaluation and appraisal for my re-mounted ring. Nancy Stacy is in Walnut Creek and is extremely well-regarded in the field...I went to her for an appraisal of two stones that I had shipped out to her. She helped me pick out the final stone and was a great help. I would''ve gone back to her for my insurance appraisal except that my busy schedule wouldn''t allow a trip all the way out to Walnut Creek...that''s when I found Barbra here in the city and she worked out just fine. Good luck!

I have recommend Balzan''s Gem Lab for a number of years. Courtney Balzan is a well qualified gemologist located somewhat in your area.

Thank you for your replies, KristyDarling and Oldminer. Do you have contact information for Courtney Balzan?

Thank you.

Carole is really nice. She looked at my earrings that I bought from a shady online store without even charging me. If I wanted a full appraisal, it is $125. She works in the pennisula but I think she can travel to where ever you want.

I also used Nancy Stacy in Walnut Creek...we have used her for multiple purchases, she also works out of an office in her house. She's probably the closest to me here in the South Bay. She also teaches appraisal classes for the GIA.

In terms of who is legit, if Barbara is on the PS list, I would trust that. Also you can check their certifications if they have a website or similar and see what their history is. Reputable appraisers don't just become reputable randomly, they usually have some history in the industry.

I have taken my items into the local Willow Glen jewelers a few times (small internet purchases) and had them check things out for me for free.
