I suffer from terrible indecision anyway but for this dilemma, I am utterly paralyzed by the fear of doing the wrong thing.
The recent thread about jewels we love but don't wear has inspired me to be more decisive. The truth is, I don't wear Buttercup or Edwina. I am ashamed of this.

I love Buttercup for her setting, not really her stone. I love Edwina the stone, but not the temporary rabbit-ear setting. The idea came to me yesterday that I could end the misery of indecision with the 'use what you have' strategy. I could take the 5.3mm stone out of Buttercup and mount 6.2mm Edwina in its place. The diameter difference is only about one millimeter, but it would be a visibly larger stone, so the petals of the ring setting would be much more covered up.

The question would be whether it should be done, or if I should leave Buttercup alone and put Edwina in a necklace similar to (but not quite exactly) Grace's 'clover' below.

I'm mortified that I stare at the photos but can't make up my mind. What does the team think about my dilemma?

Tagging @Rfisher who has in the past so generously worked with photoshop to assist the forum previously.

Here's Edwina.

Can Edwina fit into Buttercup? Like you say, she's a bigger stone, is there room to put her in place of Buttercup's stone or will she sit awkwardly and ungracefully high?
What will you do with the stone from Buttercup? Would that go into a clover setting necklace?(gorgeous setting btw, I've been doodling a similar one for earrings and just realised where my inspiration came from)

Thanks for replying. I think if Edwina were mounted in the buttercup setting, she would have to sit slightly lower, given the puffier crown she has, combined with being 1mm larger. That's my assumption, anyway. I could ask David what his plan was, just to be sure.

I would use the smaller stone as a stud earring paired to the below 5.2mm OEC I just bought which turns out to be a pretty good match. That way I'd finally have diamond studs!

i love buttercup so much
why do you think you don't wear her?

Thank you! Several things get in the way. She's a size 10-ish and it feels risky for her to be slipping around, and I need to send her for sizing down. I don't trust my local to do it properly. Also, her north/south petals make stacking with another ring less than ideal. And I don't want to look engaged, so she's a RHR (on my "driving finger"). She just hasn't 'gelled' on me, I suppose.

(on my "driving finger")
 :lol-2:  :lol-2:

Is there room in the buttercup ring to accommodate a larger depth of the bigger stone sitting lower - or is that another modification the jeweler will need to make?
Do you trust the jeweler’s skills to finish the modifications off and look appropriate?

You flatter me with your request!
I’ll have a stab at mocking up the 1mm difference in how much of the petals will be covered up later on tonight. I don’t see that as the issue - I see the depth/setting height being more of an issue?

OOF!
I hadn't thought of that. I'll take a look and measure the depth of the stones to compare them. If it isn't possible to mount Edwina, I might start looking for a new 5.3mm center stone for Buttercup. I really do want to wear her. Especially when merging onto the highway at rush hour. (jk)

If that's the outcome, I'll still put Edwina in the clover setting in oxidized silver (or black rhodium) with a rose gold chain, and use the 5.3mm stone as an earring. Oh boy, my brain is spinning around.

There must be a flow chart template online to help make these (if this, then that) conditional decisions. I just don't remember where to find it.

You can see my (hopefully not too flawed) method of scale/measurement - I hope it’s somewhat accurate.

If your jeweler can preserve/ replicate the bloomed finish,
And you’ll actually wear it -
I say go for it.

WOW WOW WOW!
Thank you @Rfisher what a great job!
You are such an asset to PS and I'm so grateful for your help.
Is it ok for me to share those pics with David Klass?

You are most welcome.
Of course you can share with DK, unsure if the pics will be of much help to him tho.
I still think it’s a vertical issue - the crux of how nice the outcome of the switch out will be.

The diamond cannot be more than a fraction of a mm deeper...

I say go for it if you can! Win win.

Also, her north/south petals make stacking with another ring less than ideal. And I don't want to look engaged, so she's a RHR (on my "driving finger"). She just hasn't 'gelled' on me, I suppose.
Will putting Edwina into Buttercup resolve these reasons for why you don't wear her? or would you just be putting Edwina into a prettier setting and then not wear her?

... Thinking more about the fit thing - if you get Buttercup resized for your middle finger (on either hand) you won't look engaged as that's never an engagement finger imo. Would that help you wear her? Cos she's a beautiful setting and with Edwina would be even prettier and needs to be worn.

oh my heart weeps for her
please get her sized soon
she wants to gel with you soooooo much
she is one of my favourite PS rings
would she fit on another finger - or is she not that big ?

Ooof thats yummy.
Sorry daisy but i love these proportions with edwina even more so!
I say go for it! Edwina wants YG!!!!

I love the scale of buttercup in that gorgeous setting. If you are going to replace that stone, I would find a diamond you love that won't detract from the balance between the setting and diamond. Edwina is stunning too!

Thank you so much!

Wow, Edwina looks better in that setting than I expected. What does the group say to this look?

It’s vintage-y but has clean enough lines to be an everyday necklace. I’d have the petals smoothed a bit, perhaps

I'd size it for the right middle finger, which I find a very comfy finger to wear rings on.

I dont like diamonds for pendants bc they are too small lol

I took the liberties of pulling this photo from your other thread for a different look at comparison.

Does this help you?
I know what I would do.
I wouldn’t. The bloom finish is too precious to tinker with and risk. I think the proportions of the original diamond is prettier to my eye with the buttercup.
But- it’s all personal opinion - anything you choose will be lovely!

the proportions of the original diamond is prettier
You’re right. I have flipped from the ‘before’ to the ‘after’ pictures so many times and while I like seeing Edwina in a buttercup setting, it doesn’t need to be the actual Buttercup ring itself.

Thanks for taking the time to show me with the pictures! I’m going to leave Buttercup in her original state.

Thanks to everyone who voted! As difficult as this was for me, I’m glad I asked for your advice!

I think Buttercup is beautiful just as she is, or at the most, a stone that appeals to you more but is only a fraction bigger. Even Edwina at 'only' 1mm bigger seems not quite right in that setting. I don't feel it's worth your while getting a new stone on the off chance you'll wear Buttercup more often? Please resize her and wear her :D

Buttercup is such a beautiful ring as is, so how great to keep!
Middle finger rings look cool and are very comfortable.

Thank you so much for all your kindness!

DW feels strongly the 5.3mm stone is too small for Buttercup, and that Edwina is the perfect size. She asked me to save the photo for future reference!

I agree your favorite setting and your favorite diamond are a match made in heaven!

I LUV Buttercup with either stone!
:kiss2:
