Hi All,

I am sure this has already been asked or discussed, but I couldn't find anything and was a bit curious? My DH purchased my OMB from Mark at BE 3 years ago, and granted it is a substantial time that has passed, I am still in shock at the rise in cost of Diamonds? I had inquired about upgrading my Diamond with Mark, based on his upgrade policy, but it seems I would need to be willing to spend close to $40k for a jump into 3ct. Land... I have a 2.5 now, with a pretty decent spread 8.67x7.53... it seems back then you could find a 3ct, granted a J in the low 20s... I decided to hang onto my stone and just reset it for now. I think based on what DH spent before, we would only be able to obtain a 1.7-2 ct...it's crazy!!

It's definitely painful when I am searching on PS, and my search turns up an old post and I see the budgets + what they could buy. If only I had been in the market back then!! :wall: :wall:

I just glanced at the chart. Absolutely amazing! My hubby purchased my original engagement ring, a 1.25 ct deep platinum solitaire, in 2005. If we were to get engaged today, I would definitely have to look for other engagement ring alternatives.

Yes it is crazy how prices have jumped compared to few years ago but diamond prices have actually dip down a little, it actually made the news. I read somewhere that BN made more profit than projected coz prices on stones dropped and people are buying again. I have been shopping at their website, and BN has emailed me about price dropping a few hundred $ on some of the diamonds that I was looking at. Most recent email was this morning on a 1.5 F stone that dropped about $700 :o . Not too shabby right? But still not like it was a few years back of course :snooty:

Wow. The chart is fascinating- given my diamond was purchased in 2010, this makes sense... it's crazy to think that with my old budget now, I would have to drop nearly 1 carat... it's insane! I'm not complaining by any means, but an upgrade is not in the cards for me right now, reset it is!!

Of course, that's just a small subset of RBs of a certain make - I would guess the prices of antique stones in recent years have skyrocketed by comparison; certainly it's much harder to find "great deals"! I think I could probably buy one of the two stones in my 2.5ctw OEC studs for the price I paid for both a few years ago... but I spent several months scouring the secondary market buying and returning a multitude of not-quite-matches, so again, not quite a fair comparison...

One thing I have noticed recently - maybe just in the last few months? - is some standardisation in prices of unique shapes like rose cuts. Four, five years ago they were much rarer, and much less sought after, and I remember that prices were absolutely all over the place - if you could even get hold of them!

I have been thinking about this post and what it means for future generations in regard to engagements.

After discovering PS this past spring, I am coming to the strong realization that I will probably have to start an engagement ring fund for our boys. We can at least help them out. We come from humble backgrounds and are the first in our respective families to have a diamond engagement ring (we consider my ring, our ring). Hubby will think that I am crazy, but I don't see how they will be able to afford diamonds without financing it when (hopefully) they get engaged in 20-25 years.

Hubby paid cash for mine. I wouldn't have been pleased with it if he had financed it.

Edited- Edited last sentence.

The increase in the cost of diamonds make it moot point to upgrade my diamonds today. I hope to pass down my stones to my children to used as e-rings when they are ready as I believe the cost will be even crazier when they are adults.

Yssie- unreal... the jump is amazing, and depressing. Who said Diamonds weren't an "investment?" Lol... makes me wish I had pushed for a 3ct back then when it was only a few thousand more, not $15-20k more... I know, I sound ridiculous even saying that...I'm so blessed, but it's unbelievable!

Crystal24k- how thoughtful of you! My husband paid cash for mine too, albiet this is a second marriage for us both, and are established...I remember my first diamond was a 1.37, SI1, Not eyeclean, but it was the biggest diamond we could get at $5k...uncerted (natch)... bought at a B&M. I remember having to make payments on that little guy. I can't even imagine 20 years from now!

Chrono- I feel the same...I will likely just hang on to this guy and pass it down to my daughter.
