In your opinion -- how wearable is chartreuse chrysoberyl?

Hi -- I have the opportunity to set a beautiful 6.5 mm chartreuse chrysoberyl into an existing halo ring. It is a vivid stone. At this point I've only seen photos of it, but I can't get this stone out of my mind -- it's incredible!

I am a complete gem novice, and there is no one in the city I live in that carries anything of this size and color. So before I go through the hassle of getting it shipped, I wanted to ask those of you who own this gem about your impressions of it as a wearable gemstone. My skin is slightly freckled, with pink undertones, but I can wear both yellow and white gold.

I did see photos of someone's ring set with a beautiful chartreuse chrysoberyl, but of course I can't find the thread using the PS search function.

A chrysoberyl is a durable stone that can be worn everyday as long as you don’t purposely bang it around. I know Tourmaline Lover has a gorgeous chartreuse chrysoberyl set into a halo style ring.

Are you thinking of TL's chartreuse chrysoberyl? Her gorgeous ring is here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/mint-garnet-in-rose-gold-chartreuse-chrysoberyl-in-2-tone.146390/

With a hardness of 8.5 and imperfect cleavage, it seems like a great ring stone. Durablility issues aside, if you can't get this stone out of your mind, then I have a feeling you'll enjoy wearing it. Plus, chartreuse chrysoberyl has a brightness and vibrancy that just pops, so I think it would look great against any skin color.

Thanks, Chrono and Cellantani -- yes, that's the ring! Oh, what a beautiful stone and ring!

It would replace my diamond in this ring (made from both white and yellow gold):

Gaack, PS hates me today. Trying again...

It’s a beautiful ring; what are the purplish stones in the halo? Does the measurement of the chrysoberyl fit the setting?

Re: In your opinion -- how wearable is chartreuse chrysobery

I'm pasty white and I wear it all the time, no problem (if you're worried about it next to the color of your skin). Love that gem - it's one of the favorites in my collection. Thanks for the kind words. Please post photos of your stone!!

Thanks, Chrono. The stones in the halo are light-medium purple sapphires. The chrysoberyl is a portuguese cut by Richard Homer, which is an almost exact match in diameter to the diamond that's currently in the setting. I'm also considering a purple spinel, but would prefer a contrasting color.

Re: In your opinion -- how wearable is chartreuse chrysobery

No, I think the chrysoberyl will be smashing in the setting over a purple spinel. If anything else, the contrast of neon greenish yellow against the light purple will make the chrysoberyl pop even more.

Beautiful ring, who made it?

I must admit I never drank chartreuse in my life, I own an alexandrite and an "absinthe" chrysoberyl and both are not scratchable and very bangable. Moreover, they sparkle like crazy and practically all chrysos are, to a degree, color-changers, so they are fun stones!

I think that a chrysoberyl cut by Richard Homer must be a stunner, I can not even imagine how bright it can be with the concave cut! Small wonder you want to replace a diamond with it!

Well, that's encouraging -- I'm pasty white this time of year, too, LOL. Yes, my concern is more about "wearability" in terms of its appearance, since it is so bright. Your ring is just a stunner.

Yeah, this combo really seems to be the perfect example of "complementary colors" on the color wheel (remembering my high school art class from decades ago!).

Thanks so much, crasru. Wink Jones of Winfield's/High Performance Diamonds made it for me in 2009. I'm trading the diamond in for a smaller size, higher-color-higher-clarity stone, and will put the diamond in a bezel setting. This will become a right-hand-ring, and I want to do something fun with it. This will be my first serious colored stone purchase.

Everyone on this forum was so helpful to me when I was searching for a blue sapphire. I have a problem with stones that go "dark" under low light, so I decided blue sapphires are not for me. Interestingly, I don't have the same problem with these purple sapphires -- maybe because they are much lighter in color?

I just got an e-mail saying the stones will be shipped out to me, so I will post photos of the stones next to my ring when I get them in a few days. Thanks, everyone!

crasru -- I have a bottle of chartreuse in my liquor cabinet! Too funny. I've never heard of an absinthe chrysoberyl -- do you have a thread on your alexandrite and absinthe chrysoberyl? These is a new stone "family" for me.

Re: In your opinion -- how wearable is chartreuse chrysobery

Oooh, this is exciting! Can't wait to see your pics when the stone arrives. Should be a very interesting combination.

Absinthe chrysoberyl is in my bracelet. Maybe it is not absinthe, I have never seen one either but luckily most respectable painters have each painted at least one bottle of absinthe, so I can imagine how it looks like.

here is my alex thread... I have tons of picture made in different light, some of them look fine but they are on external disk and I dropped the disk! Now my son has to retrieve info from the disk. Most of my photos are on that disk...

crasru, I love your sense of humor! Your "absinthe" chrysoberyl is beautiful. I really like the bracelet design -- the metalwork is great.

I've never seen an alexandrite in person. The color change phenomenon is fantastic and your photos demonstrate it really well. What an incredible stone!

I'm digging out my bottle of chartreuse for a photo shoot -- I can't wait to see the stones.

Lula - I am breathlessly waiting for your chartreuse chrysoberyl! When you receive it, should we get together, wearing our chrysoberyls, pull out bottles of chartreuse and absinthe, and drink them both? To our stones! I bet they will sparkle even more after we finish the bottles!

Ha-ha, that would be fun, and not only would our stones sparkle more, we would sparkle more, too, with the help of our friends absinthe and chartreuse!
