I LEAVE FOR CALIFORNIA ON THE 27TH OF MAY TO PROPOSE...AND I HAVEN''T DECIDED ON A RING YET...SHE''S A 5.5 RING SIZE AND I''M NOT SURE WHAT CT. SIZE WOULD MAKE ME LOOK GOOD...AND NOT SEND ME INTO BANKRUPTCY..LOL....ANY SUGGESTIONS, BECAUSE I HAVE NOT A CLUE!
 
Can you give us a general idea of how much you can spend?
 
And what shape of stone you are looking for?

And what ''feel'' you want the ring to have: modern, vintage, traditional?
 
I know you want to look good BUT what will make her feel good?

Does she wear much jewellery? What size diamonds do her friends/colleages wear?
Is she an active outdoors type of girl? You will have to make sure you find the right setting for her lifestyle.

Do you have an idea of what she might be expecting from you?

At this date, I''d suggest going for the best diamond possible set in a plain tiffany setting. Then the setting can be changed later if she wants another set.

We need a price range and a carat size range would be nice too. How are we supposed to help you when we don't know if you are looking for and how much you can spend on it.

We can probably find you an emerald cut diamond between $3000 and $30,000. But it is a waste of time if we don't have an idea of what you can spend.

No, not possible. You are waaaay off price wise.
 
No, not possible. For 1.5 carats you need about 11, 000- 12,000.

For 3,500 including the setting... your going to get an Emerald cut under a carat in a 14K white gold tiffany type solitare.
 
For $3,500 you''re looking at maybe around .85 or so.

Only if that''s for the stone too. Add a setting. And considering it''s an EC -- H-I VS2.

In a word: No.

1.5 carat -- these days you''re talking 10K & up. Unless you''re thinking about clarity enhanced stones.

A guy here last night bought a square emerald cut: 1.35 carats ... over 10K. For the stone alone.
 
An emerald cut under a carat will look pretty small. I''d go with a round if you''re going under a carat. Plus, you have to have higher clarity on an EC due to being able to see through the stone more easily than a round brilliant.

This is generally true...but I would add, unless you can find an EC cut with depth in the 63-65% range.

It''s a difficult task and even more difficult task to find an EC with these characteristics that is otherwise well cut! However, if you can find it, it will appear about the same size as a round of the similar carat weight. Tacorie-ring''s EC cut is a good example of this and you can do a search for her to see her ring.

Yes, but her EC is about 1.7 cts., just keep that in mind!
 
i think you could get an emerald cut *around* that size range for *around* that price range but it woudn''t be a great cut, so you need to think about what she would appreciate more, a nice clear, sparkly diamond, or a bigger one.
everyone''s priorities are different!

That size stone (6.53 x 4.48) will look very nice on a size 5 finger. Don't stress out about large carat size. A lot of rings you see around here are not people's ORIGINAL engagment rings. They are upgrades after many years.

It's much better to have a well-cut, gorgeous, classic stone than a big-ass cloudy Ebay special!!!

ETA: My mom's e-ring is a similar sized EC and it looks great!
 
Here is a very nice emerald cut diamond I found on Blue Nile - .95 carat, H color, VS2 clarity, very good cut, with nice measurements. THewy''re asking $3462 for it, and you could put it in their white gold four prong setting for $300 - that would only be a couple of hundred dollars above your limit.

However, for a smaller diamond, you may want something with more sparkle. An oval gives great finger coverage, and they''re very affordable. Plus, you can go down slightly in color & clarity which should knock some cash off the price.

Here is a very nice oval, 1.20 carat, J color, SI2 clarity, very good cut, faces up very large. They''re asking $3410 for this diamond, and you could put it in the 6 prong white gold setting for $300. The additional sparkle & size of this shape should look a lot more impressive on her finger than a .95 emerald cut. Here''s the link to this stone:

I personally wouldn''t go with Blue Nile... he''s so short on time... I would go with James Allen b/c he can get you pics of the diamonds first (which BN won''t do). Cuts down on time. Plus I really don''t like BN settings.
