All else being equal, what are the major austhetic differences between a cushion and a round brilliant?

A well-cut RB will be brighter and a cushion will be poofier.

I think there are more differences than that...a RB is round and a cushion is sort of in between a round and a square (rounded corners). Also, a cushion has chunkier facets and provides a more vintage, old-world look, where an RB is very modern and highly geometric.

Is one shinier, or brighter or has more sparkle?

The shiny and brite qualities are based on the cut. A well cut round brilliant will always out flash another shape. Cushions come in squarish to rectangularish with smaller "crushed ice" facets to chunkier facets. A round is easily judged by numbers. A fancy shape isn''t. It''s really what''s aesthetically pleasing to YOUR eye. If you look through the Show Me The Ring Eye Candy folder, you''ll see hundreds of stones. What appeals to you?

Well, if you look at them side by side, you will notice many differences...In terms of "sparkle", it really depends. Cushions give off a softer, more vintage look (I think), but both (if good cuts, color, etc) should be really pretty.
