Maybe I''m being silly but I was truely just shocked about the price for sizing a ring DH will be giving me for Christmas. It is an art deco piece that is platinum, all my pieces are in WG so I have never had to deal with plat prices.
I just reiceved the ring a couple of weeks ago and it has been needing to get sized. It is going up two sizes (6.5 now need it for an 8.5 for a RHR) which I know that adds to cost and it is plat another add. I definatly want someone with a good rep to size it since it is such a delicate older piece. I have taken other jewelry to a guy in town to fix and he did an good job but I chose not to use him again because last time I went into see about sizing this particular ring and I asked him if he could just make sure everything looked ok I was NOT looking for an apprasial just that he would maybe do a heat test on the diamonds to see if it was what I paid for then we could get to business but he cut me off imidiatly and said I dont do apprasials and I understood that and he just kept cutting me off and saying the same thing over and over and usually I am can deal with a lot but he really made me frustrated and hurt my feelings over a simple question I was asking him. So that started my journey to look for somewhere else to take it to be sized.

We just moved here about six months ago so I was asking around to see where else would be a reputible place to take it that could take care of it and that does great work and I came up with the store that my ring is right now sitting waiting to be sized and they gave me my quote and I about sucked my teeth in. She quoted me $236.00 and I just looked at DH like what do we do? and he said well it has to be done which is true (To size one size up in plat starts at $158.00 and goes up from there is what she said). Usually when it comes to something that has to be done I just suck it up and pay it but I guess with this I was just surprised at how much it cost to size the ring. And so I left it to be sized.

Like I said I know:

A) Its an older piece and is deicate so it would possibly take extra time to work on.

B) Its Platinum

C) It is going UP 2 sizes

I guess I would just like some feedback on is this price normal?! Am I stressing out? Like I said I know nothing about platinum as all my pieces are in WG, but can someone shed some light on this for me? I really really dont want to go back to the guy in town esp after he hurt my feelings but I don''t know if he would be a whole lot cheaper and still to maybe the same work.

Am I getting ripped off do I need to go get my ring back asap and get more quotes or is this normal and I just need to leave it where it is?

I would get a few quotes and then decide... usually if they are intricate pieces, many will ask to see the ring prior to giving quotes.

Yeah I guess I didn''t think about that after I left the place #1 I was so upset I just automatically toook it to place #2 because that is the only other place with a good rep that I knew of and it has to be sized. I guess I just wanted to know if that price seems reasonable.

can you send it back to the place you bought it from for resizing?

No, I bought it from an individual and I''ve bought rings before that needed to be resized and I guess I thought this would be no problem like my other have been. Thanks for your suggestions

$236.00 doesn''t sound unreasonable in a lot of markets for the work.
It is a couple hours labor + the plat. to add to it.

I''ve only had platinum rings sized down, and it was about $60 for 1 size. Over $200 does sounds kinds high I would think, but if it''s wide/needs finish work to make it look right, etc, then maybe that is a good price?

I also have a platinum set and was quoted $750 if they sent it back to the designer and $400 if they did it in house.

I needed both rings to go up from a 6 to a 6 3/4, they also replaced the prongs on the e-ring and reset one little diamond that was spinning. I was also shocked but was not comfortable with going somewhere else.

I had to have my plat ring sized up about 3/4 a size and it cost me a little over a $100. I live in FL.

I think 6.5 to 8.5 is actually 8 sizes up. I know My jeweler charges $50 and calls @ ¼ a size

That''s pretty steep IMO. Getting a whole new bezel rebuilt by hand in platinum on a very, very delicate filigree ring, getting a bunch of stones retipped and put back in, and getting a stone unset and a new one set, two large cracks in the ring perfectly repaired (very, very delicate workmanship on that part) and large sizing beads cost me about that about a month? ago.

Try a few other places. However sometimes cheapest is not always best, like with tattoos, if you know what I mean. I have a very good relationship with a really great benchworker who I refer a lot of people to, so I think he tends to undercharge me.

Thanks for all the replies it makes me feel better at least :) and l agree NY I feel the same way and I think that''s what caused my first initial want to post because I was shocked of the price and wanting to make sure it was right I was surprised and hesitant of the price but not comfortable going anywhere else much less not really sure where else to go that would have as good of a rep. I was on my lunch break when I got the quote and when I got back I was telling my boss and one other that was in the office about the quote and all of them have had repair work/ bought from this jeweler and had great experiences. I live on the coast in MS and platinum sizing sounds about the same price wise in FL yet again another comforting fact. I really do appriciate the replys I knew if I could atleast vent or ask for expirences it could be here thanks so much (also I''m writing this from my phone so forgive any errors I can''t seem to catch them all sometimes)

You could get more quotes, but I wouldn''t go back to the guy that upset you in the first place - to me that would be creating a bad vibe around the whole situation/process - not to mention if he did or said something wierd.

I admit I would keep looking if I were you as well. The last two platinum resizes cost me $60 (down 2 whole sizes) and $50 (up 1/2 size). Anything over $100 would feel outrageous to me.

Considering the risks associated with altering a ring that is older, one that was not made or sold by the merchant who is going to size it for you, the price is fair. Platinum is amazing costly. The price of luxury items is always high and one must be prepared to pay for all the things which come with such luxury items. Everything related to luxury is more and more expensive. The middle class and low pay folks can afford less and less luxury and the rich, well they just keep getting richer in spite of higher and higher costs.

So long as the job is done properly and in a timely manner, the price is very much secondary. If you saved $20 somewhere else and they didn''t do such a good job, you would need to spend the entire sum over again possibly. Do it once and right the first time with the precious things you want to keep.

Huh, maybe I''m just not well-versed in resizing prices, but $236 doesn''t really sound all that much to me. Plus, if you''re talking about a vintage ring I''d be willing to pay a premium to make sure it''s done by someone who understands antique jewelry and won''t just treat it like some simple Tiffany-style solitaire. Do you have anyone who specializes in antique jewelry in town? Because, if so, I''d call them and ask who they''d recommend.

Thanks again for the replys, Hest I wish I had someone in town that delt with antique jewelry I would go to them in a heart beat but as of yet I haven''t found anyone. I just made the move about 6 months ago, going from Houston to the Gulf Coast was a big jump, not really in living standards or the area because we are originally from the MS AL areas but it was a jump in retail standards as far as people specializing in diff areas of work. It would have been for sure easier to find someone out there. But as of now I am going to just leave the ring where it is, I know the point was made of how the cost of all metals are going up and that doesn''t exclude plat, so I guess as of now I just won''t be making anymore jewelry purchases that need to be sized!

Ditto Oldminer. The price seems reasonable to me. Sometimes the cheapest solution isn''t the best.

I recently paid $50 to size a 14K ring up one size...its crazy.

Buy a Cartier stone.
