Hi there!

I'm new to the forum. I'm here because my soon to be fiance asked me to choose an engagement ring. The budget we have set is $4k. I'm not very interested in a solitaire/center stone kind of ring. I think instead I would like to get a lovely diamond eternity band. I'm open to a 3/4 band as well. Platinum is a must, as I don't want to have issues with white gold discoloration later and want the white color.

I'm looking for 2-3 carats of diamonds in the band, and I've just put in a quote request to IDJ after doing some reading here. I also chatted with Brian Gavin but they are way out of my price range. Blue Nile, however has a nice sale right now, which has these rings available within budget:

I'm a size 6.25, will probably end up with a 6.5.

Any opinions on the Blue Nile options/pricing or other suggestions on where to look for a great eternity band in this range?

Many thanks.

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I'd also contact David Klass. He does very good work and is one of the more affordable recommended jewelers:

I don't know that he has pre-set bands available, but he can make you what you want.

Have you checked whiteflash? Ideal cut diamonds with height color and clarity. Mine is 2.3 ct and was $3600 a few years ago.

I got a quote from whitefish for $3950 for a 1.60 u prong 3/4 eternity band (platinum) so it's less carat weight and more expensive than the Blue Nile options I looked at.

Probably because of the platinum?

$200 difference for platinum, but quite a bit less carat weight than what you purchased.

you should also inquire with Yekutiel at ID Jewelry. He makes beautiful eternity bands. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Welcome to PS! :))

The cut of the diamonds is a very important factor and will impact the sparkle and liveliness of the diamonds in the ring.

I'm not surprised WF was more expensive than BN because, if WF uses their ACA melee, its safe to say that their ring will reflect more light and have more life, sparkle and fire than the BN ring. To me, that's definitely worth more money.

Lots of people have been advised to ask for 'PS quality diamonds' when working with ID Jewelry so that they get diamonds with a high cut quality.

I look forward to seeing photos when you get your new ring!

:wavey:

I've always liked the Blue Nike garland ring, and they have a great return policy so I think it's worth it. In the past they had this as a half size that was much bigger on the finger, this one is pretty thin..they have it in the half with sapphires I believe and it is gorgoeous!!! I don't know if that would interest you...

Thanks for the help! I'm still trying to figure it out. Part of the issue is that I'm stuck on the garland design, but concerned that the cut with blue nile may not be great. I pinned blue nile down by asking them for cut information and they said "as each of the individual diamonds are fairly small, they usually will be a good cut. it's difficult to get diamonds of that size any better than that in cut grade."

I really want something that's excellent cut. I'm talking with both IDJ and BE right now, getting a quote on a standard eternity band as well as whether they can create a more offset diamond style, somewhat similar to BN.

When it comes to the eternity band, BE gave me an option with VS2 as well as with eye clean SI1. Only a $300 price difference. What do you all think - should I bother with the upgrade from SI1 to VS2 if they are eye clean when set into an eternity band?

A "good" quality cut isn't what I would call good or acceptable. But you need to decide what makes you happy.

You might find the attached very interesting. Its about WF ACA melee. Is it possible for you to visit WF or order one of their rings so that you can see the ACA melee for yourself? They have a return policy, of course.

By the way, I don't work for them. Just wanted to bring up the topic of cut because its important, and you need to consider cut quality if you want to do a fair apples-to-apples comparison.

I have a beautiful, shared prong wedding band from IDJ with 15 pointers. PS quality F/G eye clean SI1 stones and I asked to make sure they were H&A with no black carbon. My coworker got an eternity band from them too with 20 pointers and it's unbelievable and at an unbeatable price. I wouldn't hesitate to go with them and personally wouldn't pay for VS in stones this small even for only $300 more (that's more mind clean than eye clean to me!).

I will toss in another idea - would you consider a 5 or a 7 stone? I love eternity bands, but since this will be a standalone ring for you, I was wondering if you might want to go with a bigger 5 stone for example (30-40pt each)? I would still consider the above mentioned vendors where IDJ will probably give you the best value and I would definitely upgrade to VS clarity, if the price difference is small (with any vendor, that is :) )

Ditto!

I don't think I like the 5-7 stone rings quite as much. But I really appreciate the suggestion!!

So, I've got two quotes I'm debating;

1. IDJ with a $3650 price for a full eternity of 15 pointers, total of -~3 carats at excellent cut, G or better, SI1. They said they'd use "pricescope diamonds". I didn't ask for a 3/4 quote yet. They said they'd give me a 10 day return policy as well.

2. BE with $3950 for a 3/4 eternity of 15 pointers, same diamond quality as above. However they offered to send me the setting in advance so I could try it before they finish the ring.

Thoughts?

Do you have a photo? I'd love to see!

I think that you would be happy with either vendor. However, if you It wouldn't hurt to see if BE come close to IDJ's pricing (if you decide BE is the vendor you want to go with). I remember a few years back when BE was ERD, a member of this forum was able to negociate a bit with ERD when she presented them with a quote from IDJ.

Ooops, sorry for the previous post - what a mess! I really need to proof-read. However, Landisone, you obviously got my gist. Looking forward to finding out what you decide. An eternity ring is definitely a "wish list" piece for me!

Update! After a lot of consideration, I decided to go with BE for a custom piece. I wanted something with a bit more of a garland style rather than the straight eternity band. BE worked with me on pricing, and now my order is underway! Yay!

Awesome! Please share pics once it is on your finger :)

I can't wait to see the pictures I love the garland style, I don't know if you have seen the ring that was famous around here a while back from Brian Gavin that was a garland style, I want to say Dreamers ring but I could be wrong, I think that's was my first love as far as diamond rings go, as a matter of fact I think I am going to put that ring back on my list :). It was a half eternity I believe and I think it's had three owners from pricescope!

I know I'm late to the game since you have chosen. Congrats on your beautiful choice. Can't wait to see final pics. My 2 cents, I love my 9 stone engagement ring. 33 pts each, platinum band and F color/SI1 and they are gorgeous. It is very comfortable and I receive compliments on my ring all of the time. It is so simple and clean paired with my platinum wedding band. I sometimes stack with a vintage ring I found on eBay. IMG_1896.jpgIMG_2296.JPGIMG_2842.JPG

Thanks so much everyone! 773Dianeb -'that's beautiful!! In the end I decided I wanted diamonds all the way around. Even though it was more practical to have a 3/4, I just fell in love with the look of eternity and I stuck with it in the end.
Geargirly and wombats - wow that's amazing!! Her diamonds are larger than mine, but that design is very similar to what I settled on, except that I went full eternity. That is one gorgeous piece!!

IMG_3597.PNG So it's here!!
I had very good service from BE. I worked with Chris and he was responsive and helpful.
The ring looks great! My only tiny complaint is that the prongs make the stacked smaller diamonds look a bit rectangular. I didn't notice it when I got the setting to try on since it didn't have diamonds in it yet.
But it's a beautiful ring and I'm happy with it and with BE!
Tried to upload the video also but couldn't get it to work.
