Hi everyone, I''ve been lurking for a few days, but now I''m ready to ask a question.

My fiance and I recently went and bought my engagement diamond (before I found PS). I wanted a Radiant. I''d compared them on bluenile and even sent some comparison stats to the gemologist. She said she could get me the same price or less for those decent stones.

Here is my question. After we purchased it, I got a terrible feeling I''d made a mistake (but this could just be me terrified of spending 2,749.00 in one day).

This is the diamond EGL report that came with the diamond:
weight: .72 Cts
Shape and cut: Radiant
Measurements: 5.69 - 4.58 x 3.30 mm
Depth: 72.1%
Table width: 71%
Crown height: 9%
Pavilion depth: 59%
Girdle thickness: Medium, Faceted
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Cutlet: None
Clarity: SI1
Graining: Nil
Color: G
Fluorescence: None

The price was including a palladium 4 prong basket setting. I fell in love with the radiant shape when I browsed the website radiantcut.com. However, I didn''t receive a Certificate that accompanies every Original Radiant Cut Diamond weighing over .70. Unless I wasn''t supposed to? I''m confused. I know you guys frown upon EGL (I wish I''d known).

Did we do wrong?

OK . . .

Your stone (yes, the one on your finger) is still listed as being available online (stones are available to many vendors and sometimes it takes a while for the database to be updated).

So here is your exact stone and what it was listed as costing via online vendors:

USA Certed price on website: $1259 discounted price through PS: $1178
Abazias price: $1324 (seems to be discounted $2 through PS -- nothing to sneeze about)

Also, both listings say your stone is EGL Israel, not EGL USA, which is not considered to be as reputable.

Do I think a simple setting is worth $1400? No.

Honestly, I'd return it. I think you overpaid by up to $1k on the diamond alone.

phoenixgirl, thank you so much for your quick reply.

The laboratory Report Certificate No. is 2762087739.

I feel sick inside. We charged the ring through American Express, I will speak to them about declining and returning the purchase. I know they have a process for these things.

I can't believe we over-paid by that much! I am livid. I feel like she took me for stupid.

I'm so nervous about returning it. I feel like they might laugh in my face. Do you have any advice on how to go about that? Do I need to bring anything else, other than the ring, with me? Should I get it reappraised to proof my point?

Thank you for your honesty, it's refreshing after this debacle.

Please don''t be livid. Most brick and mortar (B&M) dealers can''t touch the prices of online stores. She may not have intentionally given you a bad deal. What''s her return policy? Anyway, now that you have found Pricescope, we will be happy to find you a great deal on a stone. Welcome.

You''re right. The initial shock was pretty bad. However I''ve calmed a bit now and I''ve already called AMEX and they will take care of the return for me.

The Jewelry Store''s return policy is strict, in my opinion ("your purchase may be exchanged within 7 days from purchase date), however I''ve already called AMEX and they will dispute that in my behalf. I mean, I bought it, but the ring didn''t even ship out to me until a week and half later.
I''m totally confident that this will get resolved. I''ve printed a few quotes from online vendors, plus I will get some retail quotes, and I will have the stone appraised as well, just to to drive my point home. I want a refund, not an exchange etc. Amex says that they are confident this will be easy to do.

I''d love to get some advice, now that I''ve learned of price scope.
I''m totally in love with the radiant diamond

. Our budget is $3000.

It would have to be 7 days from the date you received it. You didn''t have it in your possession when 7 days expired from the date you told them you wanted it. I am happy you realized this before it was too late! You''ll be able to get a much nicer ring!

Thank you both for you positive outlook. :)

Ring shopping wasn''t as fun as I thought, and I was glad when it was over -and although I''m not ecstatic about starting the search all over again, I AM looking forward to feeling better about our purchase.

I''m trying to narrow my searches down a bit, can anyone tell me what stats are good to start with? I know it hard to have a general guideline, especially with radiants, but anything - opinions, personal advice, etc. on where to start? I definitely love the glittery, cracked ice look.

I''m focusing on prettiness, rather than size (but I don''t want to leave it behind). I''ve been reading a lot here and the common rule is to keep the depth and table within 2 % from each other. For a more glittery, icy look it''s recommended that I keep depth percentage below 65% - (and the table percentage within 2% of that number). Should I be selecting a higher color grade to get the icy glittery look I love? What should the girdle be? What are the most important factors to consider, if any?

I welcome advice!

To make it really easy, contact Jonathan at Good Old Gold who is very good at picking fancy cuts as well as top cut quality rounds. He''ll pick a couple of good ones for you and make you a video to look at the stones (you can see videos he has made on the site). That way, you have an expert pre-screening the stones for you, and all you have to do is choose which one you like best!

Ditto. This will make it much easier, and more importantly, MUCH more fun than shopping previously was for you. I''m sorry you''ve had such a bummer experience, but not surprised. I went through a lot of *fill in the blank* when I tried shopping locally for my upgrade. I ended up almost getting ripped off, but returned the stone well within the time allowed on their return policy, which the store promptly took down in its entirety from their website.

You mentioned the Original Radiant cut diamond. This is a branded radiant cut and I think only sold through authorized dealers. I looked at them too when I was looking for a radiant but decided against paying the premium. I got a generic radiant and just love it.
