IGI finished jewelry report - has anyone gotten one of these, and do you know how much it costs?

I have a friend who is considering buying a piece of jewelry but is concerned about the possibility of a lab grown stone sneaking in there… there’s multiple pieces around and under a carat (but much bigger than melee) in the piece (so it’s not really viable to unset them and certify them individually). She was looking up online and apparently IGI will certify finished jewelry pieces! I’d never heard of such a thing until she told me so I rushed here haha.

Depending on the price of the report it might be a good option for her. She really only cares about whether something is lab grown or natural.

Has anyone ever gotten this service, and would you have an idea of the price? If it’s wildly expensive it’s one thing, but I can see it worthwhile if it’s at a reasonable price.

Any info is welcome and appreciated!! Thanks!

It’s ok if you need the paper and probably ok for identifying synth but otherwise recently I have seen such glaringly off faulty reports from them recently, not sure it is worth it. Must say though that most problems I have seen pertaining to FCDs. Good for the buyer though! But either there is no checks and controls or they employ color blind people. I see no point sending FCDs to them but in colorless they are considered fine.

Some jewelers have machines that can easily test natural vs. lab grown. Hopefully someone has one in your areas!

I think she would be okay with variance/split grade when it comes to colour and clarity; but definitely not to pay for a natural stone and get a lab grown. So as long as the cert can definitively prove that I think it would be worth it (depending on the price of the cert). Would you know how much it would be for? I checked the website but I couldn’t find any info there.

Oh that’s a good idea! The jeweler she would buy it from does have that machine and did say it’s all natural, but I think she wants to be on the safe side for insurance etc reasons to have an external certificate. It’s an expensive piece - I think around $25k so she doesn’t want there to be any doubts.

No grading lab can grade FCD to GIA standards and if you ask a lot of cutters/dealers neither can GIA consistently but its the most accepted.

Thanks @Karl_K! Much appreciated and totally agree too❣️ But these were soooo off some of them like I cannot believe. One pink is graded and F I really just cannot imagine what on Earth happened there. Ok it is a light to fancy light pink but pink nevertheless and very obviously so. And no it is not a switched report because it is lasered. I will most likely get a review since I received it as a ring and cannot do GIA unless I unset. On another stone will do GIA. But very weird glaring mistakes.

My mother's ring went to IGI before I sold it. They graded the natural diamonds, - - found "chips" a scuff on two girdles - and found the carat weight larger than my estimate. Lower in color and clarity than I thought. 18 kt. gold. the report was ~ $100 with photos. Would use them again.

Thank you so much for weighing in! $100 is a great price for peace of mind. I assume for her since it’s a necklace the price would be higher (more work involved) but likely in the ballpark. My concern was more if it was thousands of dollars.

I’m glad you had a good experience with them. Definitely makes me more likely to encourage her to get the cert.

Also, pretty ring!
