Where else would you drive? we're booking a car for tomorrow and driving from NY to Massapequa in Long island and we're looking at google maps to see if theres anything else we should while we have the car. We wanted to see jersey shore but its too far to combine with long island. So I'm wondering if theres anything local to NYC or long island worthwhile seeing?

Well, I don't know LI well at all but GOG is on LI...are they anywhere near Massapequa? It's supposed to be raining all day tomorrow so I think going to GOG is the *perfect* thing to do!!! And if you go, pics are requested (pretty please)! :cheeky:

Statue of liberty. Some nice coffes, my friends i knew in NY.

actually the whole reason we are getting the car is to drive out to GOG! my partner says 'i wants things to do and to see, not diamonds!'

LOL, well, great minds think alike! :cheeky:

It's going to be raining all day so where can you go after GOG that would be fun, an activity and indoors...let me think. He doesn't like museums right? I seem to remember you saying that in another post somewhere or am I getting confused?

I'd park it far from NYC and get a day pass for the subway, or use a limo service.

Traffic and parking fees in Manhattan are insane.

Subways run horribly (if at all) on the weekends these days. So much track work going on.

You could always go downtown Manhattan and check out the 9/11 memorial and walk around that area if that is something that appeals to you guys.

yeah hes not very cultured but does like the famous sights and anything to do with sports. He's been great to put up with all the diamond stuff so far. i think he's now more educated than the majority of diamond buyer out there! It was fantastic to just walk through NY diamond district today. so much stuff and big diamonds too! i saw in 1 window what looked like a near carat vivid blue diamond. and plenty of gigantic vivid yellows. We're staying very close so i am hoping we can go back again before we leave.

in terms of parking its a rental car so we pick it up near times square where we're staying and then when we're done we park in back in the hotel pickup/dropoff where we got it from. I don't think we'll try and park anywhere busy its hard enough for us to keep to the right side of the road here. I'm under the impression that massapequa park in long island will be quiet enough

Gray line bus tour!!! Or you can do the cheesy (but fun) wax museum which is also nearby.

Hi,

I don't understand the point of going to the jersey shore. Long Island is a beachfront paradise. Jones beach is out there. The Hamptons are further out(the rich, rich live there)3 hrs. Ask GOG if theres anything of interest out there.

You don't need a car for the city.

Lol they're IN massapequa.

If you are only renting the car to go to GOG, I'd cancel that and just take the Long Island Railroad. It has a stop close to GOG and will be far more convenient for you traveling from midtown. It will also be much less expensive and spare you needing to drive in a place you are not familiar with. You need to be an assertive driver in NYC - driving defensively while continually moving - to get anywhere. It's not an ideal place to drive, considering traffic and the fact that public transportation is good and reliable.

Beaches are not really a great place to go this time of year because of the bad weather. The east end at least has towns with shops and such but it is really too far away for a day stop, given your itinerary. The south shore beaches are just beaches next to a highway - nothing else to do. Sandy wiped out coastal communities and they are still in the process of rebuilding.

If you want to make another stop on Long Island, do something in Nassau county, or pick something in Brooklyn or Queens so you can make a stop on the way back from GOG. Maybe check Trip Advisor or some similar tourist website. It's hard to make a suggestion without knowing what you like!

thanks for your helpful advice guys. we stuck with the rental car which worked out fine as we are both comfortable driving in cities. We were surprised how rude/cutthroat newyorkers could be when it came to changing lanes. I'm comfortable bullying my way into a new lane but this was a new level. it was a great experience. we got honked a couple of times but we did our fair share of honking back

good old gold was fantastic and I'm so glad we drove because i started getting a migraine while we were out there so I was desperate to get back to the hotel ASAP afterwards. my partner went back out with the car to Yankee Stadium which was closed but someone let him go in and take photos which he loved. and he tried to tip them and they refused which made his day as we're not used to having to tip everyone every 5 mins.

So glad to hear it worked out great!

Glad you had a great day! Sorry about your migraine-hope it is gone now!!
Yes, New Yorkers drive like maniacs but not as bad as the drivers in Rome. Man, rules there are just a suggestion and a weak one at that haha. And the driving craziness was only exceeded by the parking craziness- parking on the grass, the curbs, wherever you could in Rome lol. But I guess I'm just used to the craziness that is driving in some cities...Glad you arrived back safely to your hotel!

Did you take pics hippi? :naughty:
