I am just graduated from Marquette University and now going to Madison for Medical School. Therefore, I have no money and am planning on buying the ring with loans(I''ll worry about paying them back when I''m a doc lol). In any case, I am looking at spending about $3000 for a ring, and I have been looking around on the internet. I have found this loose diamond and was wondering(without seeing it) what ya''ll thought of these specs on it:
Details:

Size: 0.74ct
Shape: Round
Color: G
Clarity: SI2
Depth: 60.8%
Table: 59%
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None
Certification: EGL
Price: $1599.99

Is this something that I should take a drive down and see? Or, is this a little too small for my girlfriend. The color and clarity can be a little lower to get the size up, but is it worth it? Will she notice the difference in a 3/4 from a 1? What tradeoffs should I make. . .my parents are all about size and that color and clarity should be lowered to get a bigger diamond. I just need some advice from you all.
Thanks in advance

How does 0.7-0.8cts, I/J-SI1 ideal cut sound?

I think there is much more about a diamond than weight, color and clarity, and most people would value what the right proportiosn do to a diamond's appearence, once they see one.

Besides, what setting do you have in mind? A solitaire should be quite a bit less than $1000

Btw. nothing wrong with G-SI, but the EGL mark coud mean that this is a stone with visible inclusions.

You should do a Pricescope search to determine the relative value of that diamond against similar listed stones. The EGL cert throws a curve into searching for equaivalent value with a GIA paper however. When searching for GIA graded diamond use H SI2 as the grade and you may have a more accurate euqivalent picture of type and value.

As far as budget and family constraints go, I'd say you are going where your budget takes you, unless you use a plain mounting and come up $700 to $1000 for the diamond alone.
Instead of $1500/$1600 for the diamond you might go as high as $2700 for the diamond with a fairly plain mounting.

Do a Pricescope search with a $2500 budget entered in instead of parameters and you will see the variety of stones you could consider, their weight, shape, color, clarity, etc.

Don't be pushed into going too heavy and getting a poor quality. If the family wants to throw in a couple thousand for you, then by all means, spend someone else's money.
Otherwise figure that you are a like a compromise diamond yourself right now. When you really grow up and become the doctor, then you can pay those bills and reward her with a present that says than you for sticking with me when I was a student and broke. Then, no compromises. Right now, if she loves YOU and not your future degree status, then a 3/4 ct stone will be just fine. If it isn't, I suggest assistance "STAT" BEFORE you get yourself into really deep water with someone who cannot be satisfied.

i think you can do a little better if you look around PS a bit. run a search.. id be a tad wary of an EGL SI2, especially without seeing it first.
if you want to stay in the SI2 clarity, make sure the inclusions are hard to see, maybe near the edge of the stone. If you get an ideal cut stone, you could go down a few grades in color and move up in size a tad...so many options..im sure others will give you some great leads..
