My DH (God love him) bought me the Amazon Kindle for Christmas not assuming the mad dash for them thanks to Oprah. So, understandably, it was backordered *past* Christmas...originally, it was supposed to ship in January which, all things considered, was perfectly reasonable...then they pushed it back to Feb...then early March...now today its LATE March/EARLY April.

Now, I find out that at some point in the upcoming month, they will launch the Kindle 2.0...

So I call Amazon to ask if/when it is launching and to find out and to also find out if it would make more sense to cancel my current order and pre-order/whatever the new Kindle...and they are all secretative and junk!!! And I''m like "listen, I''m going to be waiting 4 months to get this thing...the least you can do is tell me which option is better"...but alas nothing...

I personally don''t think they should be taking orders for old Kindles with the new one launching soon...and I certainly think that those who are waiting 4 months for a Kindle should be at least given the option of getting the new one!!!! I mean, 4 months is a long time to wait for an outdated gadget.

yeah I totally feel you...I think you can find out the spec and info the their website and compare the 2.

Amazon is famous for things like this...so is overstock....

so sorry I don''t have any real "advice" just more sympathy. :)

I have a friend who is very into this technology. Definitely, definitely wait for 2.0. I would cancel the order and wait.

Cancel and wait... they usually improve with the newer versions... stinks that you dont have it NOW though. Sorry.

I was thinking of keeping my place in line and waiting...and when it comes out (I''m checking daily) canceling and just getting the new one...that way I don''t loose my place in line (as Amazon calls it)

Think of it this way, with either option it will be worth your wait! My friends who have Kindles love them more than anything.

ihaircolor did some researchin'' for you. I often check blogs and such for mac products as well as some games Im a fan of (kid at heart that loves Sims) -

Seeing as they''ve delayed it past the holiday season there might be some serious kinks they''re trying to figure out, you know what I mean? To pass up on holiday sales would take a lot on their part, so there has to be a legitimate reason. I suppose if youre not going to see the original Kindle for at least 4 months theres no harm in canceling and pre-ordering. Hope this helps!

this is business week..
Here Comes Kindle 2.0
Posted by: Peter Burrows on August 25

I can confirm what McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman is saying — that Amazon.com plans to unveil a larger-screen model of its Kindle e-book player, aimed at students, in the coming months. And I’m also hearing some details, similar to TechCrunch in July (my apologies to TechCrunch for the use of “Kindle 2.0” in this headline; I somehow missed this post that uses the same phrase while writing this post), about an upgrade of the base model, that I’m told is coming in September (though Wright Ragen thinks it may be in October). My sources say the new version is significantly thinner, has a better screen, is more stylish and includes fixes to some of the user interface annoyances with the first version. One person that has seen the device says it is as big a leap from its predecessor as the iPod mini was from the first iPod. “They’ve jumped from Generation One to Generation Four or Five. It just looks better, and feels better,” says the source

Old Kindle meet the new Kindle?
(Credit: Boy Genius Report)

After rumors surfaced on the Web a few months back that a new Kindle might be on the way, Amazon.com did its best to shoot them down, saying a new Kindle was not coming this year. Well, Boy Genius Report has gotten a hold of some photos that appear to be the Kindle 2, so we''re curious what Amazon has to say now.
From the looks of the new device, Amazon has tried to address some of the criticisms of the Kindle, most of which revolve around its somewhat homely design and a few poorly placed buttons. The shape has been modified to make the new Kindle more attractive, but it appears Amazon is sticking with the same off-white color scheme--for better or worse.

Old back versus new back.

The Boy Genius Report''s mole or "ninja," has some comments about the new Kindle. First, ninja says the device is basically the same size as the older model, but is thinner and has "a slightly heavier feel, and it feels much sturdier." The source indicates the new model uses the same cellular EV-DO network for downloads (it''s Sprint''s network in the current model) and a metal back is visible in some of the pictures. I particularly appreciated the look of the new leather carrying pouch for the device, since I don''t like the existing Kindle''s protective case. There are more photos here.
Boy Genius Report also notes:
As far as buttons go, on the right side, the bottoms from top to bottom are: Home, Next Page, Menu, a joystick, and Undo. On the left side, there''s Previous, Page, and Next Page. We''re told the buttons are significantly smaller, to avoid accidental page turning. The joystick takes the place of the scroll wheel and it "takes a little getting used to." As far as the redesigned keyboard...it "has a good layout, but lettering on the keys could be darker." Continuing our tour around the unit, next to the sliding sleep button, there''s the headphone jack, and on the right-side edge you''ve got the volume up/down buttons. What''s interesting (and you can see this in the photos) is that the backside of the unit is mostly metal, with the speakers at the bottom of the back. One more plus? They''ve finally ditched their own charger. The Kindle 2 can be charged with a miniUSB cable.
No word on when the next-generation Kindle will arrive, whether there will be a European model, or how much it will cost. However, I have a feeling we''ll soon get an announcement from Amazon--if indeed this turns out to be a real product that will go up against the upcoming Sony Reader, the PRS-700, which features a touch-screen display and will hit stores next month in time for the holiday buying season.

I''m so sorry you have to wait for your present. That sucks.

And I definitely agree that they should be more informative!

However, you should go give your DH yet another big hug, because the Kindle is awesome.

I didn''t think I''d like it because I''m a major bibliophile, and I thought I wouldn''t want to switch away from paper books. I never will entirely, but for a lot of things, the Kindle rocks. The one I use actually belongs to my FI, and it''s possible that one reason I love it so much is that he''ll buy me anything I like on it - I think he figures that it''ll keep me from accumulating more books that need to be stored somewhere. But my favorite things (in no particular order):

1. It''s very compact, so if I''m reading a long or heavy book, it takes up no more space and is no more difficult to hold during a commute than a small paperback.

2. I can read in the bathtub - I put the Kindle into one of those large ziplock freezer bags to protect it from splashes and drips, but the large buttons make it very easy to turn pages, and the screen is quite clear. No more wrinkled books from wet hands in the bathtub!

3. I can jump between several books, and it never loses my place in the book I''m reading. I can also leave little electronic notes for my FI if I think he''s likely to read the book after me, although I''ve mostly resisted this urge so far.

Based on the (very helpful) reviews SailorsSweet<3 posted, you''re probably good either way. Some of the changes are probably good, but I don''t think any of them will affect your actual enjoyment of this delightful gadget. So you can decide based on whichever one you''ll get first, I guess.
