IDJ Earring Jackets - which size to get?

Q

Hi IDJ earring jacket owners - I am ready to purchase jackets for my 1.84 ctw stud earrings. I am torn between the .3 pt diamonds and the .5 pt diamonds for the jackets? I like the more "scalloped" look of the 5 pt diamonds but am concerned that they may be a bit too blingy. Any input would be welcome. Thank you, thank you!

My vote is for the 5 pointers!! I don't personally have them, but my friend bought them from IDJ (wedding gift from her husband that she picked out) and they are FABULOUS!! They are blingy so they are perfect for a night out, but her long hair also conceals them if she wants to wear them to work

Hold up ladies - Queenie's got serious studs - 1.8 ctw. Can you please post some ear shots with your studs? Will you have a problem if the jacket extends past your lobe?

  you girls are funny! Okay - so I went through every thread I could find about jackets. I was set on getting pave style jackets and was considering the jackets from White Flash or Costco however, they sit too flat on the ear. I like the "bowl" style jacket where the stud sits in a bowl. So after reading all of the IDJ jacket threads (a few hours invested in this) - I determined that I like the prong style jacket instead. A few posters liked the 3 pt jackets and others like the 5 pt. Some said that the 5 pt jackets were more "evening out" style, where the 3 pt is just enough bling for day or night; but much more bling than a pave jacket. The specs are as follows:

5 pt jackets for my size studs - 26 total stones (13 per jacket) - 1.30 ctw, F/G SI, PS quality stones

3 pt jackets for my size studs - 30 total stones (15 per jacket) - .90 ctw, F/G SI, PS quality stones

What's a girl to do??????? Would love to hear from both, those who have the 5 pt jackets and those who have the 3 pt jackets.

I don't want to make a mistake.

Ear shots please!

What is the mm difference between 3 and 5 pointers?

Could they make both send both to you and you select one and ship back the one you like less?

I took a pic of these 5 pointers for future reference... My 0.87 ctw milgrain bezeled studs fit in these lolol. I think that as a queenie you can wear the 5 pointers without looking like they are wearing you! _4284.jpg

Those are fantastic! According to Joey (from the mouth of Yekutiel) - the 5 pt diamonds along with my studs will be quite blingy together; the 3pt stones will compliment them nicely however, my studs will still be center stage. The 3 pt jackets will not be the star of the show, my studs will continue to be the star. So...... will need to sleep on this.

This is what I keep coming back to. Maybe the 3 pointers are a nice compliment - especially since I was going to go pave initially. Thank you Ringo.

Are you hoping to wear them during the day? I think that would be a big indicator. If you mostly want them for night then go with
the 5 pointers. If you're wanting mostly a day time look then the 3 pointers. Those 5 pointers are beautiful and quite blingy!

Good thoughts - thank you Tyty. Mostly during the day. I wear my studs each and every day. Dressed up or down. So jackets of any size will seem like a lot of bling for me. I'm leaning towards the 3 pointers. Will wait until tomorrow to make my decision. And for super blingy I have 2.0 ctw huggies that I can wear for that fantastic looking bling.

Btw I saw your post about TB. I puffy heart the 3 prong setting TB Israel made me! 10 pointers, 47 of them for 4.75 ctw looks good dressed up or down.

Thank you PB - on my wish list. Do you have a 3 prong tennis bracelet? My wrist is 5-3/4" so I would probably get a 6-1/2" and not the standard 7". I have a 9 tcw tennis bracelet but is in one of those old school settings where they look square. Don't wear it too often. Anyway, back to the jackets - leaning towards the 3 pointers. The photo you took of the 5 pointers is quite tempting. I'm going to sleep on this and make my decision tomorrow. :wavey:

Definitely three pointers on diamonds this size, in my opinion. Halos by Victor or Steven are generally a good bit smaller than that, so to me, 3 pointers are pretty big with almost 1 ct studs! Think about the total diameter with the jackets on. If your diamonds are like 6.2mm and the 3 pt jackets add 4mm (just a wild guess) in diameter, you are over 10mm!

Very good point and I certainly value your opinion. I think I will go with the 3 pointers. Thank you DS!

Hey Queenie,
My wife has the 5 pointers for 1ctw studs. They measure just over 10mm OD. I don't think they will look too big if they are made with zero air line around a 6.2mm center stone. And if you like colored stones....WOW will you have some shopping to do! They really dress up a colored stone stud. The last picture shows the 5 pointers, 5.2mm stud and a "drop" goodie IDJ made for me to match her bracelet. My pictures don't do the stones justice. The stones are fantastic!

thank you Heyjoe - how does that drop work? I like that idea for dressy events. I found a local jewelry store - they recently returned from the Las Vegas Gem Show and had several jackets to choose from (of course double the cost of IDJ) - the 3 pointer stones looked huge on my ears and now I am deciding if I am going with 3 pointers or even 2 pointers. The .2 pointers were blingy on my ears and the 3 pointers were super blingy - I can't imagine going with 5 pointers for myself. I tend to be a bit more conservative with my jewelry as most of the women in my area wear HUGE diamond studs and quite substantial rings and other jewelry. I sometimes do not like that look and I am petite to top it off.

Another issue with my stones - due to my setting, a 6.5 mm opening doesn't work as the stone protruded out of the jacket. They had a 7.5 mm opening and that created an airline. IDJ has a 7 mm opening which is just right for my studs!!! Now for the decision - .2 pointers or .3 pointers?????

Hi Queenie.

Here are my studs (I think they're .80ctw, tho I've had them a while so I'm not entirely sure). I bought a set of 5pt jackets made for 5mm stones by IDJ and had my center stones permanently set into them, since I knew I would never switch them out. They're gorgeous! They're 9.8mm across and could EASILY be bigger and are definitely not too big for daytime wear. Personally, I wish I had 6mm center stones to give them a tad more oomph - and I'd still wear them during the day. Bliss did a pair that were about 1.6ctw and they had 8pt stones in the halos - and *they* were blingy! But I've had 1.65ctw with 2pt stones and they didn't look too blingy at all and I ultimately let them go because they weren't blingy enough.

So if you're looking for jackets to give them some oomph, I'd definitely suggest the 5pt jackets; and I like the scalloped edge, too. Just to add - your diamonds are probably around 6.25mm wide, I'm guessing. IDJ will use the jackets for 6mm stones, and there will be the teensiest little overlap of the setting, which serves to hide the 'hardware' structural elements of the jacket. But what it also means is that your earrings, in jackets, will be 10mm across; the extra .25 on your stones won't give you any extra width. 3pt stones are roughly 2mm across, while 5pt stones are roughly 2.4mm. So you're looking at a difference of .8mm in total diameter between the different sized jackets.

Will love seeing where you 'land'!

ETA Just saw your last post, Queenie, about your settings and the 7mm halo. Your total diameter would then be either 11mm or 11.8mm depending on whether you went with 3 or 5 pt jackets. If you go with 2 pointers, you'll be looking at 10.4mm as 2 pt stones are roughly 1.7mm in diameter.

Second post....

Queenie - here are my old jackets, 7mm, with 2pt stones. I got them from GOG. I no longer have the diamonds that used to go in them, so I bought a beautiful pair of hanadama akoyas - 7mm across - and use those permanently in the jackets. This should give you an idea of proportion - I hope it helps! The scalloped effect is largely missing with these.

I rarely wear these as they're just too insubstantial for my taste - which is also why I sold the diamonds. I think they're so pretty, tho, that I just can't bear to let them go. :wall:

Thank you Mrs-blop, this gives me a good visual as to what both would look like. I'm going back to the jewelry store later today to check out the jackets once again. They're not a huge purchase however I don't want to make a mistake and regret my choice. I appreciate all of your help. :wavey:

I'll post a picture of mine. My pearls are small (5.5 mm) and the jackets are the for 5 mm stones (3 pointers). My studs are 5.4 mm.

(Pardon my skin...looks terrible in these photos!)

Hi, Queenie! Just wanted to weigh in on your decision, which is of course a personal one and has a lot to do with when and where you plan to wear the earrings/jackets, lifestyle, etc! I have the IDJ 3 pointer jackets (and I adore them!). I wear them with 5mm diamonds and have some other colored stone studs as well. For me, they are the perfect amount of bling. Very noticeable and get many compliments. At this size, I am comfortable wearing them just about any place, any time. I think if I had larger jackets, I would have to save them for more special occasions. I truly don't think you can go wrong with your choice, but I wanted to add some support for the 3 pointer option! Can't wait to see your finished product!

Her'es a photo (you've probably seen it in other threads, but just in case.)

I vote for 3 pointers. Elegant and blingy. I prefer to see the studs as the stars. IMHO.

Another vote for 0.3 cts. Echoing the comment above, just preference on looks for the jacket to supplement the main earring.

Thank you ladies and HayJoe! I appreciate all of your input - I love this forum as it truly helps me to make decisions. I ordered the 3 pointer jackets this morning. They will be quite blingy for me however I will be okay wearing them often. I went back to the jewelry store yesterday and tried the 3 pointers and I just love them. Will not get them until IDJ comes back from holiday on July 11! Ughhh! Oh well, something to look forward to.
