I stumbled across this website, and it shows a pretty striking video of a garnet being picked up by a magnet.

 Who knew?

It also lists other stones and if they are magnetic or not.

If someone (pro or amateur) can verify if this info is true or not, I'd appreciate it.

Meanwhile, here's the website, put up by a gemologist who's apparently checked this out.

Fun but impractical and inconclusive if used to ID gems in most cases. The results could be skewed depending on the grade and size of the magnet, the mass of the gem, the shape of the stone, and more. I think it works best when in the field or working with parcels but I am too cautious to use it as my sole tool for most gemstones.

Thank you, iLander! magnetism is definitely one tool used in the arsenal of IDing a stone type.
