Ideas on repurposing a small sentimental diamond?

It is my mother's first engagement diamond from my biological father. He died in a car accident when I was 8 months old so I never really knew him. She remarried when I was young and my step father has been my dad.

I have a sentimental attachment to this ring probably because it's from my father that I never knew.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's cut very well. It's an oval, I'm guessing about a 1/2 carat. I do not know a lot about ovals but the table seems kind of dull. Almost like a piece of glass. The edges are fiery and lively.

Should I find a matching diamond and have them made into earrings? Should I make it a pendant? Should I make it RHR? Should I have it re-cut beforehand?

Any and all ideas are welcome! Right now it's just sitting in a box.

If you can find an oval similar to it, I'd make them studs...and I'd leave the stone in its original state....

Please excuse my nails..

Not sure what the color is, I need to take it to an appraiser if I want to find a match to make it a stud.. would it even look good as an earring? :shifty:

My vote is for a pendant. When I was younger, my mother had my great grandmothers engagement ring turned into a pendant for me.

Do you have a picture by chance?

@sln I love it!

:love:A pendant so that it's close to your heart.

My vote is for a pendant as well :) I also like the sentiment that it’s close to your heart and also that way it’s not one of two but a standalone piece. It sounds like it has a wonderful sentimental value but if as you say it’s not very well cut it would irk me to buy a second not so well cut diamond to match it if that makes sense, and to wear earrings where one diamond is very very valuable to me but the other isn’t as much.
I think a pendant is a great idea :)

Lol, yes. My thoughts exactly.

What does a well cut oval look like?? I really don't think I've ever seen one!

I also vote for a pendant. It looks like a pretty diamond.

This was the reasoning I had when I made my old engagement ring diamond into a pendant =)2

I recently repurposed a trilogy ring into studs and a slider pendant. The diamonds were ungraded, but in their new bezel platinum settings, they've really come alive.

If it was mine, I would bezel-set in East-West orientation in a bangle, as I would wear it more as a bangle than a pendant.
DK :))

Thank you all! I like the idea of a bangle as well.

Where should I look at having a custom bezel pendant or bangle made?

It looks very pretty too me and I love the sentimentality behind it. Have you given it a good bath lately? If not, dawn dish soap, water, and a toothbrush
might do wonders.

I vote pendant or ring (if you want to be able to view it and think of your dad). I actually like the setting that it is in and might would wear it as a RHR.
Looks like it may be a tad over 1/2 carat too me but of course depends on depth.

CVB would be my first choice if it fits in budget...she does beautiful work...Custom does take a while though so you cant be in a hurry to get it done (just FYI).

David Klass would be second choice if budget is tighter. Caysie is more of an artist where with David you have to tell him exactly what you want.

You can do a search on either of them in Pricescope and see a lot of their work.

Call Ilya at Ivy and Rose and ask for the "whitewave" pendant. It is about $450.00 IIRC

I would wear it as a pendant or bangle. I recently had David Klass make me a pendant from my original diamond and I have to say, the diamond in the new bezel looks so different. As a solitaire I could never really see the facets but as a pendant it glows.
I am also very very picky and I was very happy with David and his prices are phenomenal. He made me the pendant with the chain included (with a link at 16 and 18 inches) in 18 kt rose gold for $350. It took less than two weeks to make it once I approved the Cads, this included two day shipping, an appraisal, and even a lighted box and dust bag. He even sent me a video of my pendant.
For a bangle, I have a pear rose cut from JBG and I think your oval would looks great in that type of bangle as well.
Below is my diamond in its original setting and as a pendant.

Another vote for pendant or bracelet, whichever you would wear more often. I'm doing the same with a sentimental stone, I so rarely wore it as a ring and I feel like I'm honoring it more this way vs letting it sit in a box.

It looks like a pretty and not small stone.

I might wear it "as is" on my right hand or possibly as a pendant, maybe set east/west.

I agree with not doing studs and also not recutting.

I think it's lovely and I would do a halo pendant.

It's very pretty!
I had my Mom's engagement diamond (about .50 ct) set into a bezel pendant.
I did not have it re-cut because I wanted it to look the same as I remember it on her hand.
It is my most dear piece of jewelry---never take it on vacation as it is irreplaceable.

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas! I'm going to contact a couple of the vendors mentioned and try to get this project going. I'll return with the finished product :mrgreen2:

Does David usually respond to emails quickly or is it better to call? I tried emailing... @tyty333 @kayla17

I reached out to CVB and Ivy and Rose as well but I think they'll be a little more expensive. I'm also trying to upgrade my e-ring and wedding band shopping too. Trying to do this all before our wedding in March. I'd like to wear this sentimental piece on our wedding day.

Who did you have make the pendant? Do you have any pictures?
