I am interested in purchasing an idel-scope. Could someone tell me what''s the difference between the beginner scope and expert model? Also, what type of table lamp light do you recommend to judge the diamond, any min. watts requirement? Yellow light bulb or fluroence type? Thank you!

The Beginner scope is all plastic with a 6x lens. The Expert model is plastic, with a metal bezel for the glass 10X lens. Both work very well, but there is no doubt that the higher end unit has a clearer image and more "elegant" feel. We use the plastic ones in our office on a daily basis, but usually hand the expert model to people who want to have a demonstration.

Use fluorescent lighting as shown on the ideal-scope.com website.

They also sell a nifty light table that has pre-drilled spots for holding most diamonds. It works really well.

I went whole hog on things: expert model, light table, tweezer set, loupe.

This set is one of the best investments I ever made.

I agree with Perry the whole set is nice.

But if I want to screen for pre-set jewlries (diamond earring, pendant....), the light table would not really help substantially, correct?

Thanks for the kind words guys

Yes it can help - we demonstrate rings etc on it all the time in my stores
You can hold settings up to lights etc - but the portable light is more consistent - you can get used to it etc

yep the light tray it can help.

I slightly prefere the ASET scope for use on pre-mounted goods.
You dont need backlighting of the stone making it easier to use on mounted stones.
I showed it to 2 Ladies and within minutes they were using it on every diamond in the store and comparing the cut quality of the diamonds.

For unset rounds the IS is easier to read.

You can get an ASET scope from the link provided for $50

Can you use the screen of your cell phone or pda instead of a light table?

AGS is going to be introducing a hand held ASET shortly.

I just received the new presentation ASET, which for consumers is a bit pricey but the image in it is really great. It has a neat travel case, has mounted stone holders for it, and a more accurate angle setup than what was introduced previously, including the desktop model. Although the desktop model gets the photos a bit easier.

The new presentation one has built in LED lighting source, which can be used with the desktop ASET and the slide holder can be used in the desktop model as well, and yields far better photos.

I''ll try to post some photos of it shortly.

I''ve been experimenting with attempting photos using it, but they aren''t coming out as well as I''d like them to.

Doc,

The presentation ASET looks very nice, but it is for showing stones to consumers, not for photography. Having the diamonds sit in a cone leaves too much room for tilt error that is not present with the normal desk top ASET.

For photography with the desk top, remove the lense and use a camera with a good macro lense. You will get some killer shots!

OK, at the risk of getting sued... I purchased an "ideal-scope like thing" from another country a while back. It shapes like ideal scope and also has 10X viewing plastic, but its tube is blue and it does not show the view according to the real ideal-scope chart. It does not even show diamond to be blue for that matter. That''s why I want to invest in a real thing this time.

l''m still at work, but will try to post a few pics to show you if anyone is interested.

Sounds like a H&A''s scope Z.
Different animal for a different purpose

ok so let me ask this...can you make an home made ideal-scope type device..look at this theory...I am a forensic tech...The scopes we use to read prints come in 6x 10x and 15x all the eye peices are removable from their stands. I have the following colored paper and cardstock in the same colors...Blood red, hot pink, a richer hot pink and a blood red/pink mix...I cut the paper and made a cone and taped it to the lens body of my 6x scope...and low and behold it appeared to work...how accurate is this dont know...looks good though. the funny thing is I would buy one I just dont have the cash. So I have these things from work which are all german leneses that run over 150.00 each. I also have a laser light that basically you can dial a spectum you want... and i thought about playing with that but its not really going to do anything for me...What do you think of my rudimentry scope...will it be accurate or is it a joke.

meant to ask: did you get black?

Now let me see if I can understand this????????????

You cant afford $25.
So why would you want an ideal-scope - you obviously cant aford a diamond

Garry, he's already plunged his cash into the stone.

thank you julie...Im glad some one here understands...btw thanks julie for all your help with my diamond. Im getting some pics now.

Well with the stone, setting and bridal band...my 5000.00 budget is about tapped. stone was 4000, setting was 99 its wg its what she wanted. I wanted platinium but she didnt like the feel. and the 500.00 bridal band (solitare enhancer) not to mention the independant aprasial and the insurance i will be paying for...yes im broke. and 25.00 just isnt cutting right now. its pretty much like this 25.00 for something that I will use once...maybe twice. I will probably buy one later down the road but not right now.

Edit: and on a side note...My rudimentry idealscope type thing...works pretty dang good. I just got back from an independant jewler and he has a proversion of the scope can i compared it with mine...in the store...he laughed at it at first then admitted works pretty good for some papaer and a lens

Great Zikronix.

I would never denegrade anyones diamond after they have given it as a gift from the sould - it could be the worst cut in the world.

In fact I would like to design an ideal-scope that self destructs like the tape in mission impossible - immediately after the buying decision is made.
Buyers remorse is a terrible disease.

Oh Garry, you are too funny, love the sense of humor over there in AU

By the way, you were right about H&A scope. That is what that blue tube thing shows - H&A in my fancy CZ :) How does it work exactly, do you know?

And my rudimentry ideal type scope is here...dont laugh too hard...it worked. I wouldnt compare it to a legit scope but it seemed to work fine. And acomplish the same results

Paper colors
Scope with cone
front of scope
It''d be cool if you could post scope pictures.

if i can figure out how to get a pic with my camera...i will but thats the problem..how does one exactly do this

Ive tried a couple ways to get a picture....its a pain in the butt.
