I have a 1.9 round E color, excellent cut, S1 (eye clean) that I got from a jeweler after much negotiating for around 10k. It is really beautiful and looks well sized on my size 4 fingers...however, I really love cushions and radiants!! I had my eye set on them from the start but somehow talked myself out. I kinda regret it now. We bought the ring two years ago and am wondering if it would be possible to exchange it for a radiant or cushion? If we were willing to put another 5k down, what could I get? I''m assuming more since round brilliant is a more expensive cut per carat than the others? We have a good relationship with the jeweler so I think she''d let us exchange but I''m wondering how much more in size I could get with a cushion or radiant. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I don''t know what the upgrade policy of the jeweler hopefully it is a good one and you can get 100% tradein so your 5k will go towards a bigger stone.
Fancy shapes can can cost 20 - 35% less than rounds for the same carat weight, however they also can have a smaller faceup size than rounds for the same carat weight.
I would look at faceup dimensions rather than carat weight when comparing. Good-luck with your upgrade.

I did research, research, research before I got engaged, and I was also constantly drawn to the cushion and radiant cut diamonds! RBs are classic, timeless, and beautiful, but I wanted something just a little different. A lot of jewelers told me that a cushion cut just wouldn''t sparkle like a RB, but I stuck to my guns and my fiance picked out a gorgeous 2.15 ct cushion. I have never once regretted the decision... people comment on it all the time, and I don''t know what those jewelers were talking about, my ring is SPARKLY. I''m afraid I''m going to crash my car one day while staring idiotically at my ring. I also wear a size 4, and trust me... 2 ct looks big, especially with a halo.

I, however, am in a similar position of feeling that an "upgrade" is in order, in my case because I am disappointed with the craftsmanship on my e.ring and am wondering how to have it re-set by a better jeweler without losing a ton of money.

If you do make the switch, my humble opinion is that cushions look best with a halo, or with four double prongs in a solitaire, while radiants look great as solitaires but make GORGEOUS three-stones. Again, this is merely my humble opinion. Good luck!!

first off, your current RB sounds YUMMY!!!! however, i also agree with you about the preference for cushions and radiants. while picking out a ring together, bf really liked the rounds while i was in love with the cushions. he wanted to make me happy, so he bit his tonge and he got me a 2.09 carat cushion brilliant with a lovely setting that will be ready any minute now!! :D

anyway, i agree with people here that you could talk to your jeweler and see if they''d be willing to do a trade-in. sounds like your jeweler would be willing to do a type of trade-in/exchange. however if that doesn''t work out and your heart really is set on the cushion or radiant, try to sell your RB yourself through diamond bistro, craigslist, ebay etc. but be warned that you will get nowhere near what you paid for it.

what you could get depends on what color, type, clarity you prefer in a stone. also decide on whether you want a cushion or radiant - try some on and decide which you like the best, because i think there may be price differences based of type of stone alone. also, DEF stones cost more than HIJ stones, and VVS stones cost more than SIs, etc. If it helps at all, my stone is a J VVS2 and we paid a little under 11K.

Also, cushion brilliants cost more than the modified ones, but i''m not sure about the chunky cushions. Cushions are becoming very very popular, so you''ll have to search hard to find the right one. Maybe radiants are easier? I haven''t had any experience shopping for those. Anyway, I think you should try to decide what you want first, and go from there. If you have to lower your standards, prioritize what''s most important to you in a stone.

Good luck to you! Please update :)

Hi Carats

Is your original diamond GIA graded? This makes a huge difference as to what you will get for it and desirability when trying to trade up or resell. Unless you are very fortunate and your jeweller offers 100% trade in value on your old diamond and has what you are looking for, it is usual to only recoup around 30 - 50% of what you originally paid for the stone....As to how much size you could get assuming you were allowed 100% back on your old diamond is debatable, also radiants are tricky stones to shop for and cushions can be too. I think as there are so many variables the best thing to do is contact your jeweller and find out exactly what the situation is, that way you will know how much you have to spend and can go from there.

It is GIA rated....

Have you talked to the person who sold it to you?
