I want a big rock! Can you find me one?

Who doesn't?

My ever-patient DH has given me permission to start looking for a large stone (by our definition anyway!). I already have a JbEG antique cushion (1.73) set in an intricate 3 sided-pave Leon creation. That ring is getting banged up at work and I've retired it - I only wear it a couple of times per week to prevent further wear and tear.

So, my naked finger needs to be clothed. :appl: And for logistics, a stone really needs to be sourced in the next 2 weeks.

Necessary facts:

I am NOT color sensitive. My current stone is a GIA J/K approx. I love it.
I want something eye clean. I have no mind clean issues. I'm happy with the lowest clarity possible, so long as we're good to go from about 6 inches.
I'd like to keep this sub $25k. The budget can stretch a little, but I do mean a *little*.
I'd like to be in the near 9mm range or higher. One stone I've considered is 8.81x8.95, from James Allen.

I am having issues even starting the search because...I love emerald cuts, and antique cuts, asschers, and I would really like to get a H&A stone at some point, and so on and so forth.

You know you're in trouble when you can't even pick a SHAPE. :errrr: :wink2:

Could there be some bargains to be had via ebay old stones? I can't seem to locate anything, but goodness knows there are some ladies on here who seem to be magnets for these great antique deals! I did find a nice 2-3 carat OEC in platinum that sold for $14,000...a day late and a dollar short, so to speak.

So, with this budget and preferences, what would you get?

:wavey: (Please and thank you in advance for any suggestions) :wavey:

Have you gone out and tried different shapes on in the size you are considering? It's kind of like shooting in the dark if we don't have a clue about shape (and I know it's hard to choose just one!!)....

Here's a vintage emerald...a bit over your price, but I think you could offer less and see what happens. It's also GIA certed, which is nice...

Here's a 3.35+ OEC...you'd need better photos, but it has potential:

Hello,

I almost pulled the trigger on an AMAZING antique style cushion from Perry (Leon Mege's diamond guy). It was an AGS 3.01 H SI2 (eye clean) that received the AGS Ideal light designation in the low to mid-20's. We ended up buying another 3 carat from him but this was our second option. I do have to warn you that there are lots of red lines and feathers on the AGS report (hence the SI2 clarity rating) BUT the diamond was beautiful in person. You should call him to see if it is still available and try to see it in person.

I have the AGS report that I can attach but I am not sure if that is against the forum's rules. If not, I can try to find it and post it for you.

Good luck!

I posted just before going to sleep and now I have all of these wonderful suggestions to wake up to! :)) Thank you all for your guidance, I'll be checking up on all of these at work today.

Yenny, I've tried on everything - I must have very "average" hands because they all look ok. I will eliminate an asscher though, as face up size in this sort of upgrade is important. I do lean in the direction of rounds, be them modern or antique. So I'll consider that a decision: rounds or cushions only.

Again, thanks everyone. :wavey: I'll definitely get on to these!

missgotrocks, I love WF's stones and this one is gorgeous, but perhaps a bit smaller than what I'm wanting for this sort of upgrade, you know?

yenny, I really love that 3.35 ct you posted - wonder how much the vendor will be willing to negotiate? :naughty: I also noticed that she has a return period ONLY in the case of misrepresentation. I don't really like that and would ask for a no-questions-asked return policy. I can't justify spending that much money, sight unseen, with no recourse available.

Circe, thanks for keeping an eye out for me. I saw both of those as well, but they're just not quite right. I'm hoping to pop this in a 6-prong, sturdy, everyday sort of setting. I don't want to end up with something that I'm not comfortable wearing all the time again.

slg, I've followed that thread on the preowned area, but am hesitating. I'm not sure I've ever seen that color in person, and if I don't like it... I've only got one good shot at getting this ring this year (thanks to travel arrangements and the like). I'm just concerned that if I get it and don't like it, that kisses off my chances of upgrading this year.

trueblue, thank you for that wonderful information. I've emailed Perry and will see what he comes back with. I saw another poster's review of his service in obtaining her stone last December and was impressed that his pricing looked comparable to James Allen, which I usually find to be rock bottom. I did specifically ask him about the cushion you described, so we'll see if it's still around.

Kelly, I've been in touch with Erica. The 2.67 is on my shortlist, and that 2.6 is beautiful as well. :))

So, waiting on returned emails from Yekutiel and Perry... :appl:

Wooo, the 2.67 is beautiful, and definitely closer to the spread you are looking for. There is just something about that 2.6, though. If I had the funds I would be all over it. :lickout:

Good luck finding the perfect stone! What a fun project!

Yes, Kelly, the 2.6 is stunning - the photos are delicious. Just not positive I want to go down to an EGL L (so a GIA N? O?). The faceting, to me, is perfect though. The 2.67 is not as pretty in photos or video, but Erica has explained that is due to it mirroring surrounding colors - and in this case, it is the black of the camera that seems to show up through all of its facets.
