I’ve been looking for a perfect diamond to go with a cushion halo setting. I have narrowed down to 2 diamonds but cannot decide. Can you please give me your opinions?

Both are triple excellent.

2.0 carat (8.2 x 8.2 x 5 mm)
Ideal cut
G color
SI1 (confirmed eye clean)
Deapth 60.8%
Table 59%

2.5 carat (8.7 x 8.7 x 5.4 mm)
Ideal cut
I color
VS1
Very strong fluorescence
Depth 62.3%
Table 57%

I'm buying it online so cannot compare them in person... Both stones are priced similar. I like the 2.5ct because it's bigger, but at the same time I do not want a diamond with yellow hint when looking at it from angle. Also the micropave diamonds used in the halo setting are H colored...

Your opinion is much appreciated!

Not enough information. Do you at least have lab reports or cut proportions? Otherwise, we don't even have the most minimal of information to make any kind of comparison.

You also need crown and pavillion angles to be able to do a HCA score.

You also need to add which lab report they are graded by because GIA has a different standard of triple ex cuts to EGL.

Here is the additional info.

Both are GIA graded.

2 ct:
crown 35°
pavilion 40.6°

2.5 ct:
crown 35.5°
pavilion 40.8°

Thanks!

Solely by the numbers/proportions, #1 has better potential by quite a bit: 1.3 HCA

#2 is 2.6 HCA, most likely due to depth and a steeper crown.

If I were buying a 2 + carat stone, I would want the best cut I could find that was within my budget. Also even a SI1 clarity in this size may not be eye clean to my definition, regardless I would never buy a stone like this without seeing in person or having lab reports, Idealscopes, ASET, picture images, even a Sarin report...that is me.

As mentioned stone #1 has the best potential, however GIA averages facets, then rounds the numbers, not all excellent cuts are created equal.

You mentioned that you were buying the stone online. Can you ask the vendor whether they can provide an idealscope or ASET image? It's a long shot, but if they can provide one it'll make your decision a whole lot easier.

Are you open to looking at other vendors that provide more information like those images? It's a pretty substantial purchase, and I personally wouldn't want to spend that much money without knowing exactly what I'm buying, something you can't really do with only a GIA certificate.

Thank you very much for all the helpful comments.

Here are the pictures of the diamonds the vendor sent to me...

What do you think of them?

I will ask for idealscope or ASET image of these.

They look good so far, but you'd need the idealscope image to see whether there is leakage, particularly in #2. I would prefer VS clarity personally in a 2 ct+ stone, so I'd really rather have the larger I VS1. But I wouldn't consider buying it without an idealscope image. What is the price on it? It likely is discounted because of the VS fluorescence, but I view fluorescence as a plus in I color stones as long as it doesn't make the stone too hazy in sunlight.

Definitely IdealScope before pulling the trigger on anything.

It could just be the angle of the picture, lighting or the stone, but the 7 and 8 o'clock arrows on #2 are obviously washed out. Like DS said, could be leakage, but the only way to really know is with IdealScope. A 62.3 depth is a getting a bit on the deep side, so that might be the cause for some table leakage.

Re: I VS1 2.5 ct or G SI1 (eye-clean) 2.0 ct... please help!

One more thing to consider is that a 2.5 ct stone is going to be pretty huge in a halo, so you need to think about whether you are wanting to maximize size or go a little smaller. H VS2 would be the perfect compromise between the G and I stones!

I'd get the 2.5 for the size alone. You will notice a difference in 8.2 vs 8.7 mm. HCA score isn't perfect, but it may be a gorgeous stone! I have a 2.43 (8.7 mm) in a halo and love it!!

If they have a return policy, it would be worth it to me to get the 2.5 to see in person. :))
